Ariana Grande Chokes Up as She Responds to Criticism on Her Appearance: 'No One Has the Right to Say S—'

Ariana Grande is open about the pressure to be perfect in the spotlight.

In a joint interview with Cynthia Erivo conducted by the French content creator Crazy Sally, Wicked The 31-year-old star choked up as she began recalling the criticism she faced throughout her career about her appearance.

“I’ve been doing this in front of the public and I’ve been a specimen in a petri dish since I was 16 or 17 actually. I heard it all. I’ve heard every version of it,” the singer said after gathering her emotions for a moment. “You’re young and you listen to all sorts of things.”

“It’s hard to protect yourself from that noise. It’s something that’s annoying no matter what level you experience it, even if you go to Thanksgiving dinner and someone’s grandma says ‘Oh my God, you look thinner, what happened?’ or ‘you look heavier what happened?'” she added.

Grande defied the level of “comfort” society at large feels with sharing their opinions about someone’s personal life or appearance, calling it “dangerous for all parties involved.”

She said that over the years she was able to detach herself from the surveillance by surrounding herself with loved ones and how she learned to heal.

“I’m really lucky to have the support system that I have and I just know and believe that I’m beautiful. But I know what that noise feels like. It has been a resident in my life since I was 17 years old. I just don’t invite him in anymore. I have work to do, I have a life to live, I have friends to love. imam so lots of love. He wasn’t invited, so I don’t leave room for that anymore.”

She also encouraged others to protect their peace. “You take care because no one has the right to say s—,” she said.

Erivo, who in the same interview talked about applying her experience as an “alternative and different” black woman to her role as Elphaba, said she was “proud” of Grande for being so honest about the subject.

In April 2023, Grande posted a rare three-minute confession on TikTok in which she commented on her body.

“There are many different ways to look healthy and beautiful. And personally, for me, the body you compared my current body to was the most unhealthy version of my body,” she continued. “I was on a lot of anti-depressants, drinking them and eating poorly and I was at the lowest point in my life when I looked like you think I’m healthy [sic]but that, in fact, was not my health [sic].”

She continued: “The other thing is you never know what someone is going through, so even if you’re coming from a place of love or care, that person is probably working on it or has a support system they’re working on with. You never know, so be gentle with one another and with yourselves.”
