Ariarne Titmus of Australia breaks a world record at the world aquatics championships.
The world record at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships has been broken by Ariarne Titmus.
The reigning Olympic champion Ariarne Titmus of Australia broke the world record on Sunday on the opening day of swimming competitions at the World Aquatics Championships as she raced to victory in a shootout for the women’s 400m freestyle title.
Titmus raced in three minutes, 55.38 seconds, shockingly finishing 3.35 seconds ahead of champion Katie Ledecky and silver medalist Titmus. Summer McIntosh, a Canadian girl, had earlier this year during the national trials broken the previous record, which she surpassed. Erika Fairweather of New Zealand finished 4.21 seconds after Titmus to win the bronze medal, beating McIntosh.

Additionally winning the World Aquatics Championships were Australian men:
One year to the day after fellow Australian Elijah Winnington won the men’s 400 m freestyle competition, Sam Short of Australia took first place. Short, 19, beat Olympic champion Ahmed Hafnaoui of Tunisia by only 0.02 seconds as he crossed the finish line in three minutes, 40.68 seconds. Lukas Martens of Germany won the bronze with a time of 1.52 seconds later.
Winnington, who had won the Budapest competition the year before, came in seventh place overall.
Following strong showings in their previous rounds, Frenchman Leon Marchand and American Carson Foster will be the ones to watch in the 400-meter individual medley as they attempt to topple Michael Phelps’ 4:03.84 world record from 2008.
The women’s and men’s 4x100m freestyle relays will put an end to the day’s activities at the Marine Messe Fukuoka Hall.
After receiving a penalty for Jacob Whittle’s early takeoff in their morning heat, the British men’s team, who were the pre-meet favorites to win, will not take the pitch.
