Dick Cavett was born in Gibbon, Nebraska. Both his father Alva B Cavett and mother Erabel “Era” (née Richards) were educators in Comstock, Gibbon and Grand Island. His maternal grandparents are Rev. RR and Etta Mae Richards, while his paternal grandparents were Alva A Cavett and Gertrude Pinsch.
Dick Cavett goes to Wasmer Elementary School for kindergarten. He attended Lincoln High School as well as Capitol, Prescott and Irving Schools to attend. When he was ten years old, his mother died at the age of 36. His father remarried, this time to Dorcas Deland, a fellow teacher. At first, Cavett had trouble getting a job. He did many jobs. He just managed to get a copy position at Time magazine.
