Asad Ahmed, one of India’s most wanted fugitives in the Umesh Pal murder case, was arrested on April 13, 2023, in Jhansi by the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force STF) killing. He is the son of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed.

Asad Ahmed’s father, Atiq Ahmad (also spelled Atique Ahmed), is an Indian gangster-turned-politician and a member of the Samajwadi Party. He served as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from 1989 to 2004 and a member of the Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2009. His mother Shaista Praveen is also an accused in the Umesh Pal murder case. She has been on the run since the murder.

In 2022, Assad’s eldest brother Mohammad Umar surrendered to a local court on suspicion of kidnapping a businessman in 2018. His second eldest brother, Mohammad Ali Ahmad, is being held in Naini jail for his alleged involvement in an attack on a real estate dealer in December 2021. Asad Ahmed is Atiq’s third son. The names of his younger brothers are Ahzaan and Abaan.

Umesh Pal murder case
In 2004, after being elected as Lok Sabha member from Phulpur constituency, Atiq Ahmed resigned as MLA from Allahabad West Assembly seat, which subsequently required a by-election. Atiq’s younger brother Khalid Azim, also known as Ashraf, ran for the Samavadi Party seat but lost to PPP candidate Raju Pal). The electoral battle turned into a political contest when MLA Raju Pal was shot dead by assailants in Prayagraj on January 25, 2005. As he was returning home from Swarupalani Nehru Hospital, the attackers opened fire on his car in Sulam Sarai area.

Therefore, Raju’s wife Pooja Pal filed an FIR at Dhoomanganj police station accusing Atiq, his brother Ashraf and seven other unidentified persons of murdering Raju. Pooja Pal’s cousin, lawyer Umesh Pal, told police that he was an eyewitness to the murder. On February 28, 2006, Atiq Ahmed’s goons kidnapped Umesh at gunpoint after he refused to withdraw and yield under pressure from Ahmed. Thereafter, Atiq ordered Umesh Pal to write a statement in his favour, saying that he was not present at the time and did not want to testify. In July 2007, Umesh Pal filed a kidnapping case against Atik and Ashraf at Dumanganj police station.

On February 24, 2023, Umesh Pal and his two police security guards were shot dead as they alighted from the back seat of a Hyundai Creta SUV outside his home in Dhoomanganj area of Prayagraj. Based on a complaint filed by Umesh Pal’s wife Jaya Pal, a case was registered against Atiq Ahmad, his brother Ashraf, his wife Shaista Parveen, two sons, aides Guddu Islam and Ghulam and nine others on February 25, 2023 . CCTV footage shows Atiq Ahmed’s son Asad Ahmed and his associates Ghulam, Vijay Chaudhry alias Usman, Arbaaz and Gudu Muslims) attacked Umesh Pal. After that, Asad and Ghulam went on the run with a reward of 500,000 rupees on their head. In March 2023, 17 years after the Umesh Pal kidnapping case, Atiq was found guilty and subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment by an MP-MLA court, while his brother Khalid Azim alias Ash Raff) was acquitted. On the afternoon of April 13, 2023, Asad and Ghulam were shot dead by Uttar Pradesh police during a clash in Jhansi.

Asad Ahmed was killed in an encounter with Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) near Pariksha Dam in Jhansi on April 13, 2023. His ally Ghulam was also killed in the battle. Both Assad and Ghulam have offered a reward of 500,000 rupees for their heads. Following the incident, police recovered advanced foreign-made weapons from the deceased. Atiq Ahmed and his brother were brought to a court in Prayagraj under tight security that morning. Atiq Ahmed was brought to Prayagraj by road from Sabarmati Jail in Gujarat for the production, while his brother Khalid Aziz Khalid Azim (also known as Ashraf) was taken from Bareilly jail. After the incident, police revealed that Asad Ahmed fled to Lucknow after Umesh Pal was killed. It is understood that he later moved to Kanpur and then to Meerut before finally reaching Delhi. He then decided to flee to Madhya Pradesh. When he reached Jhansi and was riding his bike towards the state border, the police intercepted him.
