In 2004, after being elected as Lok Sabha member from Phulpur constituency, Atiq Ahmed resigned as MLA from Allahabad West Assembly seat, which subsequently required a by-election. Atiq’s younger brother Khalid Azim, also known as Ashraf, ran for the Samavadi Party seat but lost to PPP candidate Raju Pal). The electoral battle turned into a political contest when MLA Raju Pal was shot dead by assailants in Prayagraj on January 25, 2005. On February 28, 2006, Atiq Ahmed’s goons kidnapped Umesh at gunpoint after he refused to withdraw and yield under pressure from Ahmed. Thereafter, Atiq ordered Umesh Pal to write a statement in his favour, saying that he was not present at the time and did not want to testify. In July 2007, Umesh Pal filed a kidnapping case against Atik and Ashraf at Dumanganj police station.

On February 24, 2023, Umesh Pal and his two police security guards were shot dead as they alighted from the back seat of a Hyundai Creta SUV outside his home in Dhoomanganj area of ​​Prayagraj. Based on a complaint filed by Umesh Pal’s wife Jaya Pal, a case was registered against Atiq Ahmad, his brother Ashraf, his wife Shaista Parveen, two sons, aides Guddu Islam and Ghulam and nine others on February 25, 2023 . CCTV footage shows Atiq Ahmed’s son Asad Ahmed and his associates Ghulam, Vijay Chaudhry alias Usman, Arbaaz and Gudu Muslims) attacked Umesh Pal. After that, Asad and Ghulam went on the run with a reward of 500,000 rupees on their head. In March 2023, 17 years after the Umesh Pal kidnapping case, Atiq was found guilty and subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment by an MP-MLA court, while his brother Khalid Azim alias Ash Raff) was acquitted. On the afternoon of April 13, 2023, Asad and Ghulam were shot dead by Uttar Pradesh police during a clash in Jhansi.

He then decided to flee to Madhya Pradesh. When he reached Jhansi and was riding his bike towards the state border, the police intercepted him.
