Vasculitis is an inflammation of blood vessels, which includes arteries and veins. Due to inflammation, the arteries can thicken, reducing blood flow as the walls tighten. According to the Mayo Clinic, severe tissue or even organ damage can occur when blood flow is sufficiently restricted. According to the Medical Information Portal:

“There are numerous types of vasculitis, most of which are uncommon. Vasculitis can damage one or more organs. The condition can be temporary or permanent. Vasculitis can affect anyone, but certain forms predominate in certain age groups. You may get better without therapy, depending on your type. Most types require the use of medication to reduce inflammation and avoid worsening.”

The most common symptoms of vasculitis, according to data collected from medical sites, are fever, sudden weight loss, discomfort and fatigue. Other organs in the body can be affected by the condition, including the digestive system, hearing, eyes, limbs, lungs and others.

In addition, vasculitis can cause stomach ulcers. It can also cause permanent or temporary blindness as a result of inflammation in the arteries surrounding the temples and scalp. This has a devastating effect on the eyes, which most likely happened to Ashton Kutcher. Further difficulties in the affected person’s limbs are possible. Although uncommon, edema and numbness in the hand or foot can impair balance. The person may also experience shortness of breath.

What causes the condition?

The specific etiology of vasculitis is currently unknown. However, according to the Mayo Clinic, the main reasons are infection, malignant cells in the circulation and abnormalities of the immune system. Certain treatments or medications can also cause it. Corticosteroids may be given or used to treat the condition. Surgery may also be required to avoid ruptured arteries.
