A family is mourning the loss of a relative after they say a young man was shot and killed in front of his two children.
The Fulton County medical examiner identified the victim as 25-year-old Jotavious Favorus, Atlanta’s 11 Alive News reported Thursday. A relative of the deceased spoke to the publication after his death, sharing heartbreaking details of his final moments.
Favors’ sister, who asked not to be named, said her brother had entered the gas station to make a purchase when a fight broke out inside the store with two other people.
The exchange resulted in the death of the 25-year-old.
On Thursday, the Atlanta Police Department shared details regarding the incident at the Chevron gas station.
“On 11/15/23, at approximately 10:31 p.m., officers responded to a shooting at 2111 Campbellton Rd SW,” the press release began. “Upon arrival, officers discovered a male victim with gunshot wounds. Grady EMS arrived at the scene and pronounced the victim dead. Homicide investigators went to the scene and are working to determine the circumstances of the incident.”

They added that the investigation is ongoing.
Favors’ two children were sitting in the car waiting for their father to return when the standoff began, 11 Alive reports.
“He did it in front of his children,” his sister told the news station, referring to one of the attackers. “We have to live with this. His baby mother will have to live with this.”

“He was not armed. He was not aware. He was just going to the store to buy,” added the victim’s relative.
The news outlet obtained surveillance camera footage from inside a Chevron gas station that shows two men walking through the store. According to 11 Alive, Atlanta police said they were looking for at least two people of interest when the video was released.

Investigators said they intend to share more information as it becomes available. They have not yet revealed whether the men knew Favors or not. The victim was “shot several times.”
After speaking with witnesses and reviewing video footage, Atlanta police said preliminary evidence indicates the shooting occurred as a result of an argument. Authorities believe the two suspects are driving a blue Jeep Compass.

Favors’ sister said her brother was not armed and called whoever was responsible for his death “cowards.” She also called the crime “callous” and “senseless.”
The woman, who also declined to appear on camera, said her brother was “unaware” of the danger and had “no gun or weapon” at the time of the incident.
