Audrii Cunningham was an 11-year-old girl who was found in the Trinity River on February 20, 2024 after she went missing while on her way to school in Texas.
Audria’s body was found in the Trinity River below US Highway 29. Her body was sent to the Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office. Officials were waiting for information on the cause of her death.
Polk County District Attorney Shelly Sitton revealed that officers are in the process of preparing an arrest warrant for 42-year-old Don Steven McDougal.
Shelly Sitton said,
“Based on all the evidence the police have gathered, they are in the process of preparing appropriate arrest warrants. At this time, we believe the appropriate arrest warrant will be for the death of Audria Cunningham. He is still in jail on unrelated felony charges.”
When Sitton was asked how Audrii was killed, Sitton replied:
“I can’t talk about that.”
A friend of Audrii Cunningham’s father, Don Steven McDougal, gave investigators a list of where he had been, but did not mention where Audrii’s body was found. Authorities used cellphone data and video to help find Audrii’s remains.
Don Steven was in custody after he was arrested on the night of February 19, 2024 on unrelated charges of aggravated assault.

Audria Cunningham’s mother lives in Houston, Livingston. Her mother revealed that Audrii was a loving, smart and adventurous girl. Audrii’s mother spoke to her mother on February 14, 2024 in a normal conversation and Cassie said that Audrii was very excited about Valentine’s Day.

On February 15, 2024, Cassie received a call from Audrii’s school saying that Audrii had not shown up. Cassie notified Audrii’s father and grandmother who lived with Audrii in Livingston. Audrii’s father and grandmother reported their daughter Audrii’s disappearance to the police. Cassie drove to Livingston as soon as she could and began searching for her daughter.
Audria Cunningham’s father did not say anything to the media, but he cooperated with the authorities and participated in the search for his daughter.
Audria’s father dropped her off at her bus stop around 7 a.m. on February 15th. Audrii was wearing a bright red “Hello Kitty” backpack at the time. Joshua told authorities he didn’t see her get on the bus, but assumed she would get on the bus. He got a call from her school around 5:30 PM saying Audrii didn’t make it to school.

Joshua searched the area around his house and the state park thinking Audrii might have wandered off into the woods. He checked his daughter’s friends and neighbors, but did not find her.
Audrii Cunningham had two younger siblings, a brother and a sister. Grandma was very close to her and often took her to school and picked her up.
Audria’s brother and sister are 8 and 6 years old, respectively.
A friend of Audrii’s father, Don Steven McDougal, was arrested on February 16, 2024, on an unrelated charge of aggravated assault. Don stayed at Audria’s property and occasionally babysat her. Cassie said she doesn’t know Don very well and doesn’t trust him. She warned Audrii’s father about Don Steven and that she didn’t want him around Audrii.

Cassie told the authorities that Don Steven knew something about Audrii Cunningham’s disappearance and was not telling the truth.
Audrri’s backpack was found near the Lake Livingston Dam on February 16, 2024. Her dead body was found on February 20, 2024 on the Trinity River near National Highway 59.
Don Steven McDougal was in custody on a separate charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. On the day of Audrii’s disappearance, Audrii did not make it to the bus or to school.
Don Steven McDougal is being held in the Polk County Jail on $500,000 bail.
