Georgia Trooper Dies After Being Struck by Car While Investigating Fatal Crash: ‘Our Hearts Are Broken’

Georgia police officer Chase Redner has died after being struck by a car while on duty, the Georgia Department of Public Safety confirmed Tuesday.

In the early morning hours of Feb. 20, Redner was at the scene of a traffic accident on Interstate 75 when he was struck by another vehicle, GDPS said in a Facebook statement. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“Marty, the girls and I are devastated by the news of the sudden and tragic death of Trooper Chase Redner,” Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said in statement. “As the second state trooper to die in the line of duty in less than a month, our hearts are broken for his mother and fiancee, for his friends and community, and for the entire Department of Public Safety family.”

The statement continued, “This is an incredibly painful time for their elite ranks, and we ask that all Georgians – and those far beyond our state – pray for the family, loved ones and fellow soldiers of Soldier Redner.”

According to the GDPS, Redner graduated from the 103rd Air Force Training School in 2017 and was serving as a “corporal first class” at the time of his death.

“Today we are reminded of the painful price that too many heroes have paid for our safety and the well-being of the places we call home,” Kemp’s statement concluded. “May God bless and protect all who serve.”

The details of the accident in which Redner died are still unknown, reports 11alive. It is not clear if the driver will be charged, WSBTV reports.

“The investigation is being conducted by Troop C’s specialized collision reconstruction team and is ongoing,” GDPS wrote, later adding. “The Department of Public Safety extends its deepest condolences and prayers to the family and co-workers of TFC Redner. Please pray for the TFC Redner family as they cope with the loss of a loved one.”
