Salim Ahmed is an Indian politician, best known as a member of the Indian National Congress in Karnataka. He is serving as the Member of Parliament from Hubli-Dharwad, Haviri, Gadag constituency in the Karnataka Legislative Council since January 6, 2022.

political career
Saleem started his political career as a Congress party worker organizing rallies, training camps and youth conferences. In 1982, he was elected as the student union leader of Sheshadripuram College, Bangalore. In 1984, he became the Vice President of NSUI, Bangalore.
In 1987, he became the NSUI President of Karnataka and in 1997, he became the General Secretary of the All India Youth Congress. In 1997, he was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Council and served on various committees established by KLC. In 2002, he was re-elected to the Karnataka Legislative Council. In 2000, he became the government chief whip of the Karnataka Legislative Council. In 2012, he became the Director General Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. On January 25, 2017, he served as the Special Representative of the Government of Karnataka to the Federal Government. On June 21, 2018, he assumed the post of Secretary of Telangana AICC. On March 11, 2020, he became the working president of the Karnataka Congress Committee. On January 6, 2022, he became a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council from Hubli-Dharwad, Haviri, Gadag district.

- In 2012, when he served as Director General of Nehru Yuva Kendra Sanhathan, he established a national network for rural and suburban development. He said in an interview that India will develop if rural youth clubs are involved in nation-building activities. As a youth leader, he proposed many innovative strategies to skill up Indian youth to become productive, responsible citizens of a modern, secular and technological India, thereby increasing employment. He started organizing youth programs to unite the voices of youth clubs and Mahila Mandals. These projects turned into community organizations with vast networks. He also developed programs to enhance capacity development, awareness, knowledge, communication and employment orientation among young people.
- He was the first Muslim president to hold the post of president of the All India Youth Congress after Muhammad Ali in 1963. In an interview, he spoke about this and said:
That was over 50 years ago! Muslims and minorities have always sided with the Congress. Even the party always gives them a prominent position. This is the first time a Muslim has been elected president. Moreover, I am the first Muslim from Karnataka to be appointed as the President of All India NSUI. “
- In 2020, he challenged the state government over its record spending on purchasing personal protective equipment, sanitisers and masks during the Covid-19 crisis. According to him, the Karnataka government is yet to release Rs. 2500 packs to solve the crisis.
- The BJP leader spoke about Salim in an interview and said that eating halal meat is not good and it is a shame to have leaders in the party who do so. In an interview, he spoke about the BJP attacks and said:
It won’t have any impact. Eating habits are developed over a long period of time. As far as halal is concerned, it is simply the process of purifying meat in Islam. It has health benefits, that’s why they say it’s halal. These things are not a problem at all. In fact, this creates problems for people involved in poultry and livestock business in rural areas… This will not affect the Congress party. “
- In 2020, he became a member of the three-member committee of working presidents of the Congress party in Karnataka. He spoke about the incident in an interview and said this was not the first time he had met the three-chairman committee. In the interview, he further added that when he came to power in Telangana, there were four serving presidents and Maharashtra had five. He said that strengthening the organization and empowering the president is a good thing.
- In 2022, he asked the Congress party to provide more tickets to candidates belonging to this community in the 2023 assembly polls. In an interview, he talked about this and said,
We will review it and report the list to the party. Winning ability will become the standard. We will push to make tickets available to minorities whenever there is a chance to win. Voters were moved to different houses and polling stations and such irregularities were also detected in Bidar, Vijayapura and Hubali besides Bengaluru. “
