Max Verstappen News

When his Red Bull contract expires in 2028, Max Verstappen says a lack of desire may cause him to leave Formula 1. However, he acknowledges that having the fastest vehicle on the grid may persuade him to stay.

Verstappen won the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday, keeping him on track for a third straight drivers’ championship. Red Bull’s domination appears to guarantee that the Dutchman will remain in title contention at least until new rules are introduced in 2026.

Verstappen questioned whether being an F1 driver was genuinely “a good life” in April, amid his annoyance with the sport’s expanding calendar and alterations to the format – and rising frequency – of Sprint weekends. He revealed more about his thinking while in Monaco when he spoke exclusively to Naomi Schiff of Sky Sports F1.

Verstappen, who is now in his ninth season in Formula One after becoming the sport’s youngest driver when making his debut aged 17 in 2015, said: “I love racing otherwise I wouldn’t be on the simulator at home doing other kinds. But that’s the thing, I also like doing other kinds of racing, not just Formula 1.

“I am aware that my contract will expire when I am 31 years old. I’ll have been in Formula One for a very long period by then, and it’s a lot of work. Travelling is required for the races as well as for visits to the factory and marketing commitments in between, and I actually prefer to remain at home.

I enjoy competing and winning, but if you find it difficult to travel to every race, you should ask yourself if you really want to carry on.

Verstappen claims that his desire to compete in occasions like the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race while still in top physical shape is another aspect that casts doubt on his future in Formula 1.

“I enjoy competing in 24-hour events like Le Mans and others, as well as enjoying watching the GT3 cars race around the Nordschleife.

“I want to experience all of these things in my life, but I don’t want to do them when I’m 40 or 50 because then I’m not performing at my best. I’m confident that I will still be able to accomplish amazing things when I’m 31.
