News about Austin Harrouff

A judge ruled Monday that alleged killer Austin Harrouff was not responsible for the 2016 murders of a Tequesta couple at their home on southeast Kokomo Lane in south Martin County due to insanity.

John Stevens III, 59, and Michelle Mishcon, 53, were fatally stabbed by Harrouff, 25, in a wild and random attack that also injured their neighbor Jeffrey Fisher, who tried to help the couple.

Harrouff was a 19-year-old student at Florida State University at the time. When Stevens’ face was found to have been bitten and chewed in the driveway, authorities discovered what appeared to be meat on Harrouff’s teeth. Harrouff allegedly attacked Stevens III and Mishcon while he was on his way to his father’s house in the neighborhood, according to agents.

According to records, the extent of Stevens III and Mishcon’s multiple injuries led to their imminent death, according to the medical examiner who performed their autopsies. Investigators found that a significant amount of force was required to restrain Harrouff, including the use of tasers, a police dog, and numerous law enforcement officers.

At the start of the trial, his defense team made it clear that they would seek an acquittal on the grounds of insanity. For that to happen, Harrouff had to convince the judge that he couldn’t understand the consequences of his actions, that he didn’t know what he was doing at the time of the murders, or that he didn’t know that he was wrong. .

Two psychologists, one employed by the government and one by the defense, determined that Harrouff was having an “acute psychotic episode” when the murders took place.

According to doctors, Harrouff “couldn’t tell right from wrong,” meaning he meets Florida’s requirements for an insanity release. Before making his decision, US District Judge Sherwood Bauer listened to nearly two hours of comments from family members of Stevens and Mishcon, some of whom were angry and devastated. They often spoke directly to Harrouff as he sat motionless with three defenders.

Cindy Mishcon, Michelle Mishcon’s sister, began by reading aloud countless text messages that Harrouff had written to college friends and a girlfriend in the months before the murders. She often mentioned that he was so drunk that he passed out and that he took drugs almost every day.

He seemed to get annoyed as he read more text messages, occasionally raising his voice while talking to Harrouff. She also detailed the contents of multiple recorded phone calls Harrouff made to family members while he was in prison, in which he claimed he appeared to denigrate Stevens III and Mishcon and minimize his involvement in the murders.
