Australian Breakdance Star Raygun Announces Retirement over 'Upsetting' Olympic Backlash

Raygun will no longer compete in the Olympics.

The Australian breakdancer, who went viral at the 2024 Paris Olympics for her unique dance moves, revealed on Wednesday, November 6 that she will no longer be competing in competitive dance after the public backlash she received.

Born Rachael Gunn, the dancer, 37, was mocked online after receiving 0 points for her performance in August at a breakdancing competition in the French capital.

“I’m not going to compete again, no,” Raygun told an Australian radio show 2DayFMaccording to CNN. “I intended to keep competing, for sure, but it seems like it’s very difficult for me to approach the fight now.”

“Yeah, I mean, I’m still dancing and still smashing. But, you know, it’s like in my living room with my partner,” she continued. “It was really disturbing. I just didn’t have any control over how people saw me or who I was.”

Back in August, Raygun spoke out about the hate she received online and false accusations that she manipulated the selection process for the 2024 Paris Games by selecting herself to represent Australia.

“I didn’t know it would also open the door to so much hate which was honestly pretty devastating,” she said on Instagram. “Even though I went there and had fun, I took it very seriously.”

“I’ve been working hard, preparing for the Olympics, and I’ve really given it my all,” she continued. “I am honored to be part of the Australian Olympic team and to be part of Breaking’s Olympic debut.”

Rayguna’s statement came after Australian breaking organization AUSBreak said they “stand in solidarity” with her as they slammed claims she manipulated the Olympic selection process.
