Australian Football Player Gary Rohan Returns to Practice 1 Week After Emergency Surgery for Fractured Skull

Gary Rohan makes a strong case for the claim that Australian rules football is one of the toughest sports in the world.

The 33-year-old made a stunning return to training on Monday, a week after suffering a fractured skull from an accidental elbow during a recent match in the Australian Football League’s second-tier Victorian Football League.

Although the Geelong Cats star has already been ruled out of his AFL side’s semi-final match against the Brisbane Lions on Saturday, Rohan was spotted on the sidelines of GMHBA Stadium doing ball drills with his teammates and has more than 30 stitches on his shaved head. West Australian and 7News reported.

Rohan’s gruesome-looking scar runs from ear to ear across the top of his head, which was partially shaved during his emergency surgery last weekend so doctors could put stitches in his skull.

7News reported last weekend that Rohan was rushed to hospital after suffering what the media described as a “glaring blow” to the head.

Sports reporter Andrew McCormack told 7News that Rohan was first taken to a medical room inside the stadium where “it was pretty clear right away that he failed the concussion test.”

Last weekend, Rohan shared a selfie from his hospital bed, along with his wife Madi Rohan, whom he married in December 2022.

“Not where I planned to spend the weekend,” Rohan captioned the post. “The scan confirmed a skull fracture, but I’m fine and in the best of hands. Now he is just waiting for the operation. Thank you for all the messages and good wishes.”

The injury suffered by Rohan could spell the end of his award-winning AFL career, according to several reports. Both 7News and Fox Sports are reporting that the veteran forward, who is known for his speed on the field, is currently not under contract to play next season.

Rohan made his AFL debut in 2010, playing nine seasons for the Sydney Swans before being traded to the Cats ahead of the 2019 season. Rohan has kicked 215 career goals in 200 games.
