Averi Harper will be joining our Political Unit as our new Deputy Political Director, and I couldn’t be happier to share this news.
Averi has been across the nation since joining ABC News in 2019. She has covered practically every presidential candidate in the last campaign, including Sens. Bernie Sanders, Kirsten Gillibrand, Cory Booker, Mayor Bill de Blasio, and Tim Ryan during the Democratic primary. She covered the Biden/Harris campaign during the general election, paying particular attention to the historic nomination and victory of then-Sen. Kamala Harris. At the mostly virtual DNC convention, Averi was one of the few reporters present when Harris accepted her nomination.
Over the past two years, Averi has covered a wide range of significant subjects in addition to politics, such as reporting on the racial inequities of the epidemic. She was a member of the team that created the primetime programme “Pandemic: A Nation Divided,” and she also created our poll, which showed that Black and Latino people were three times more likely than white people to know someone who died of COVID-19.
