Avicii Said He Hoped He Could 'Learn How to Be Content' in Poignant Documentary Voiceover Before His Death

Avicii was at the height of his career when he almost walked away from music, pulling the plug on upcoming concert dates to focus on his health.

By 2017, however, the Swedish DJ seemed to have rekindled his passion for songwriting — and was doing his best to look within with the hope of discovering the key to happiness.

In the new Netflix documentary Avicii — I’m Timthe producer of “Levels” (née Tim Bergling) serves as narrator, and the film is anchored by voice recordings he recorded before committing suicide in 2018 at the age of 28.

In one particularly moving scene, Bergling talks about the ways he tried to get to the root of his unhappiness, saying he visited psychiatrists and doctors, changed his diet and began exercising in an attempt to heal. However, he realized that he felt burdened by the idea of ​​having to be both Avicii and Tim Bergling.

In the film, Bergling says he began to see changes in his life when he gave himself “space to explore.” As a result, he says he felt a new sense of freedom that allowed him to finally start making music for himself.

A friend of the star named Carl Falk says in the document that Bergling “had a lot of dreams,” including “dreams of love, dreams of family,” and that he was impressed by the “new depth” Bergling brought to the lyrics of the song that would eventually be found on his posthumous album in 2019 Team.

Still, Falk admits that “there was darkness” with his friend in the months leading up to his death, as he often canceled music sessions to meditate or for other unknown reasons.

Interviews in the documentary with colleagues and associates show that Bergling was looking to the future when he went on vacation to Muscat, Oman in April 2018.

Singer Joe Janiak says the musician told him he would call him “every week” while he was traveling, while his record company executive says Bergling was excited about an upcoming date with singer Angelique Kidjo that he had scheduled while he was away.

Bergling eventually died by suicide while in Muscat. After his death, the star’s family founded the Tim Bergling Foundation, which “advocates for the recognition of suicide as a global health crisis and actively works to eliminate the stigma associated with suicide and mental health problems.”
