Avtar Gill is a veteran Indian actor who mainly appears in Hindi and Punjabi films. He has appeared in more than 300 films and more than 15 TV series. He is famous for his villainous roles. He is a member of Indian People’s Theater Association (IPTA), Mumbai.

Avtar Gill was born on Saturday, May 13, 1950 in Kalach, Ludhiana, Punjab (age 73; as of 2023). His zodiac sign is Taurus. Forty days after his birth, his family moved to Chimpur, Mumbai, where he completed his school education and later pursued his bachelor’s degree at Khalsa College, Kings Circle. Director Raman Kumar and actor Javed Khan were his partners; they helped him launch his acting career.

Avtar made his film debut with the Punjabi film Udeekan (1978), in which he played the role of fauji. His first Bollywood film was Noorie (1979), in which he played Basheer’s friend. Yash Chopra Production produced the film; it was a super hit and ranked seventh on the Indian box office charts in 1979.
He then starred in Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyoon Aata Hai (1980). The film starred Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil and won the 1981 Filmfare Critics Award for Best Film.
Apart from this, he also played the role of Avtar in “Saath Saath” (1982), the police chief in “Shahenshah” (1988), MLA Becharam in “Ilaaka” (1989), and played the role of MLA Becharam in “Agneepath” ( Usman Bhai in Aashiqui (1990), Police Inspector Deshpande in Aashiqui (1990), Salim Bhai in Aashiqui (1990) “Sadak” (1991), “Dilwale” (1994) as Natwar Lal Yadav, “Airlift” (2016) as Amrit Pal, “Rabb Da Radio 2” (2019) and “Kaamyaab” (2020), etc.
He has done more than 300 films in Hindi, Punjabi, Marathi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Telugu and English. His portrayal of villains made him famous, and he appeared in almost all movies released in the 1980s and 1990s. Regarding his role, he said in an interview:
The mirror tells the truth, I see my face in the mirror every day. I knew from the beginning that with this face I wasn’t going to be a hero, but I was definitely going to be a villain, so here I am. “

He made his television debut in DD National’s serial “Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi” (1984). He got his big break in the serial “Nukkad” (1986-87), in which he played the role of Kader Bhai. This series was loved by everyone at the time. Nukkad famously brought the streets of Mumbai into the living room and due to its popularity, its second season was titled Naya Nukkad and was aired in 1993-94.
He later worked in many popular TV shows like “Ye Duniya Gazab Ki” (1992-1993), “Tara” (1993-1995), “Gharwali Uparwali” (2000), “Detective Karan” (2003-2004 ), “Detective Karan” (2003-2004), “Tara” (1993-1995). Adaalat’ (2010), ‘Yeh Hai Aashiqui’ (2019), ‘Ayodhya Ki Ramleela’ (2020), ‘Kyun Uthhe Dil Chhod Aaye’ (2021), etc.

Avatar’s career began in theater. During his initial days in acting, he was introduced to IPTA (Indian People’s Theater Association) and his association with the association continues. In an interview, he discussed his relationship with IPTA and stated:
I continue to perform theater with IPTA because I enjoy doing theater and sharing the emotional bond with the group. Theater is an integral part of my life. “
He later acted in many dramas like “Shatranj Ke Mohre”, “Kashmakash”, “Biwi O Biwi”, “Tajmahal Ka Tender” etc.
