The restaurateur also ran the Richard Hughes Cookery School where he mentored aspiring chefs.

In a statement, his wife Stacia Briggs said: “The House of Assembly has been overwhelmed by the thousands of messages they have received today.

“Richard’s influence spreads across kitchens around the world through the hundreds of chefs he mentored.

“We are very proud of his work and kind, funny, generous man.”

Richard had been receiving treatment for 18 months when he sadly died.

The 63-year-old fell ill four years ago, but continued to work until December last year.

In a message to staff and clients at the time, he said: β€œIt was my life, and my sadness is that I lost it. I like it so much.

“But, of course, it’s not just about food, it never was.

“Joy is giving, taking care of people… bringing glamor to people’s lives.

“And it’s working with my family, my best friends, my dearest people.

“What a privilege. I was an incredibly lucky boy.”

When he was 15, Richard’s career in the kitchen began as a dishwasher at the Imperial Hotel in Great Yarmouth.

He gradually worked his way up the ranks before becoming their head chef after six years.

Soon after, he went to work at the Michelin-starred The Rookery in Cheshire.

But he couldn’t stay away from his roots for too long – he returned to Norfolk in 1991 and opened his first restaurant, Number 24.

And in 2009, he rented Zbornica.

Richard was also known for his appearances on Mustard TV, a local channel in Norfolk, where he traveled around the county cooking.
