Who Is Richard Gere's Wife? All About Alejandra Silva

Richard Gere and Alejandra Silva turned heads in 2018 when they tied the knot and announced plans to start a family despite their 33-year age difference.

A source close to the couple told PEOPLE at the time that the two were “unusually happy.” The insider added: “They are so comfortable with each other, having fun together and looking forward to their future together.”

The photo of the Dalai Lama blessing Silva’s baby bump served as their first pregnancy announcement. The couple welcomed their eldest son, Alexander, in February 2019. Just nine months later, Gere and Silva announced that a second child was on the way. The child arrived in April 2020, but his name has not yet been revealed.

In August 2024, Silva celebrated Gere’s 75th birthday with a sweet Instagram post.

“After 11 amazing years together, we still feel like the day we first met,” she wrote. “The journey we’ve shared, the beautiful family we’ve built, and the memories we’ve made are more than I could have ever dreamed of. You make my life better in every way and I’m so grateful to have you by my side.”

She runs a foundation to fight homelessness in Spain

Silva runs the Rais Fundacion, a non-profit organization that aims to eradicate homelessness in Spain in five years (the word “rais” is Spanish for roots). The activist often talks about her mission, and she told Hello! in 2015 that she used the method to understand the problems that homeless people face in their country.

“I slept on the street to understand the struggle of the homeless,” Silva said. “I’m not afraid to roll up my sleeves and throw myself into work. If I’m doing something, I put 100% effort. If I can’t, I’d rather not do it.”

Her father is a successful businessman and vice president of a football club

Silva’s dad, Ignacio Silva Botas, was the vice-president of Spanish football club Real Madrid from 1995 to 2000. Before that, Botas was a successful businessman who moved his family to Madrid when Silva was a child.

Silva was in Madrid’s elite circles when she was young and attended some of the best private schools in the city. She was also close to Real Madrid players due to her relationship with her father and was romantically linked to player Roberto Carlos.

He has known Gere since he was young

Silva said she believes the universe is on her side when it comes to her relationship with A beautiful woman star. Said the activist Hello! in 2015 that Gere was a family friend and that they had known each other for over a decade. Silva said they were instantly drawn to each other as soon as they reconnected years later.

“Our karma was attracted as soon as we saw each other,” she said. “I don’t ignore our age difference and what it means to be with a Hollywood star, but when there is such a strong karmic energy, the problems disappear.”

They were in a long distance relationship

Silva opened up about her long-distance relationship with Gere in 2015, revealing that the two would see each other when their children were with their ex.

“It’s hard to coordinate, but we don’t go more than 20 days without seeing each other,” she said Hello!

She moved to New York to be closer to Gere

After reuniting in 2014 and dating shortly thereafter, Gere married the Spanish activist in a secret ceremony in April 2018.

Gere and Silva celebrated in May, throwing a wedding party on Cinco de Mayo at Gere’s estate in Pound Ridge, New York. A source told PEOPLE that the couple, both Buddhists, greeted several Tibetan monks at the celebration. Silva wore two custom dresses for the occasion.

Just like Gere, Silva has a son from a previous marriage. She welcomed Albert in December 2012 with her ex-husband Govin Friedland, son of American billionaire Robert Martin Friedland. The couple lived in Italy with their son until they divorced in 2014.

Gere and Silva welcomed their first son together, Alexander, in February 2019. His sibling, another boy, arrived in April 2020. Their blended family also includes Gere’s grown son, Homer James Jigme, from his previous marriage to his ex-wife Carey Lowell.

She and Gere share a love of activism

Activism is a common passion shared by the couple. The foundation hosted a screening of Gere’s film Dinner in December 2017 and often attends Rais benefit events with Silva. She said Hello! Gere’s philanthropic instinct is one of the things that attracted her to the actor.
