Baby boy ‘suffocated to death after being left alone on play mat while his parents slept’

A boy suffocated after being left alone on a play mat while his parents slept, an inquest found.

Leonidas Ramsden was laid on his back on a mat that rested on his mom and dad’s mattress.

His mum Chloe, 21, asked partner Dudley to check on the four-month-old and put him in his Moses basket as she was unwell.

The inquest heard the dad checked on him at 3am but did not want to disturb the baby by moving.

He then also fell asleep on the sofa at the family home in Buckfastleigh, Devon, in April 2022.

The court heard that Chloe went to check on Leonidas at around 6am and found the child face down on the mat and unresponsive.

She told the hearing: “It was like a play mat but I only used it as extra comfort during feeding.

“I knew it wasn’t a safe sleeping scenario and I never left it unattended.”

The court heard that the mat had a safety warning that babies and young children reading should not be left unattended.

Det Con Donna Tullock said: “We were told it was a sleep pod but it looked more like under a play mat and had a sticker saying ‘never leave a child under three unattended while using this toy ‘, so it wasn’t an official sleep capsule.”

An autopsy failed to determine the cause of death, but doctors could not rule out sudden unexplained death in infancy (SUDI).

Coroner for Devon, Alison Longhorn, said the baby may have suffocated on a rug.

Recording the narrative’s conclusion, she added: “Leonidas died after being found in a face-down sleeping position while sleeping on a mat.

“It is likely that this position restricted his ability to breathe freely and he was suffocated.”
