Back to Black Full Trailer: Industry Star Marisa Abela Portrays Amy Winehouse's Tragic Downfall

‘Back to Black’, a biopic about the career of Amy Winehouse and her self-titled album, opens in theaters on May 17

Industry actress Marisa Abela steps into the shoes of the late Amy Winehouse Back to black.

On Friday, Focus Features released a new trailer for the biopic centered on Winehouse, the influential singer who died in 2011 at the age of 27 from accidental alcohol poisoning.

The official synopsis for the film describes Back to black as “the extraordinary story of Amy Winehouse’s early rise to fame from her early days in Camden to the creation of her breakthrough album Back to black which catapulted Winehouse to worldwide fame.”

“Told through Amy’s eyes and inspired by her deeply personal lyrics, the film explores and encompasses the many layers of an iconic artist and the tumultuous love story at the center of one of the most legendary albums of all time,” reads the synopsis.

A teaser trailer released last month revealed that the film will feature sequences such as Winehouse’s infamous 2008 Grammy performance. It also covers Winehouse’s personal life, including her romance with Blake Fielder-Civil and her close relationship with her mother, Janis Winehouse.

Director Sam Taylor-Johnson (Fifty shades of grey) directed Back to black based on a screenplay written by Matt Greenhalgh, with whom she previously collaborated on Taylor-Johnson’s first feature film Nowhere Boy.

In addition to Abela’s lead role as Winehouse, the film also stars Eddie Marsan, Bronson Webb, Ansu Kabia and Harley Bird.
