Dancing with the stars professional Koko Iwasaki called on her best friends to help her find the perfect wedding dress.
Iwasaki, who will walk down the aisle with longtime boyfriend Kiki Nyemchek, shared an exclusive insight into her dress-shopping experience alongside her godmother, Sofia Ghavami, and bridesmaids Valerie Rockey, Sarah McGinely and co. Dancing with the stars pro Pete Murgatroyd.
The dancer said she went to Jaxon James Couture Bridal Shop in West Hollywood, California with only an idea of what she wanted for the big event.

“All I knew was that I wanted it to be a completely different vibe than my formal dress,” Iwasaki tells PEOPLE. “My goal for the wedding weekend with a bunch of different things is to show off all of my different styles! My fun side, my quirky side, my stylish side, etc.”

To try on different styles – including ones she might not have been inclined to wear – she decided to have her bridal party choose the dresses to try on. The idea worked as she ended up choosing a dress that her friend Rockey had chosen, which she described as “completely different than I thought I would ever choose”.
“It’s a dress I would never have chosen for myself, but I knew it was the right thing the moment I put it on,” she says. “My face lit up and I didn’t want to take it off!”

“She KNEW and we knew,” adds Ghavami. “She was glowing and squealing with excitement! She was different from everyone else, the way she talked and walked and sparkled in her dress was just right. We all felt it when she came out in it!”
The group worked with a stylist named Elisa, who Iwasaki said “tuned in” to their conversations about what kind of clothes she wanted and made her feel “comfortable and beautiful in every dress.” The dancer pointed out that the experience was completely different from the “emotional” one she had when shopping for her formal dress with her closest family and friends.

“We laughed so much this time and I really appreciate the time with my girls,” she said. “They make everything so fun. Being with a group of dancers anywhere is always a good idea.”
Iwasaki and Nyemchek announced on social media in November 2022 that they were engaged, sharing several photos of the special moment. The post began with a heartfelt proposal from Nyemchek and Iwasaki bending down with a huge smile on her face. The next two photos show the couple embracing and holding hands as Iwasaki debuted her engagement ring.
“11/26/22 – Easy ask, easy yes. 🤍,” Iwasaki and Nyemchek captioned the photos.
