Marksman Soucek acted quickly to save the ball boy from serious injury, while Jarrod Bowen, who scored the Hammers’ second goal, was quick to reassure him.

Soucek held up the scoreboard so the ball boy could escape before Bowen hugged him and other West Ham players checked that he was not injured.

While he was in tears, Palace staff took him off the pitch where medical staff carried out a thorough assessment and no damage was found.

Bowen sought out the ball boy after the game for a chat and the England star presented him with his worn shirt.

The winger said: “I just managed to get it out as quickly as possible, it was just instinct.

“I saw him after the game, now he has my shirt and he’s smiling.” It’s good, which is good to see.”

The boy also told the Hammers winger that he was looking forward to playing football with his mates the next day.

Reacting on social media, one fan said: “I hope that boy is ok.”

Another said: “Ball boy seemed to catch on as the billboard fell in front of the away side for that West Ham goal.

“Jarrod Bowen was the first to make sure the boy was OK – he looked a bit shaken.”

Goals from Bowen and Soucek secured West Ham’s first win of the season after losing to Aston Villa on the opening weekend.

The Hammers face Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup this week before champions Manchester City visit the London Stadium.

Meanwhile, it was the second defeat for the Eagles after a narrow loss to Brentford last week.
