Balwinder Safri, also known as Balwinder Singh, was born on Monday, December 15, 1958, in Kapurthala, Punjab, India (age 63 at the time of death). His zodiac sign is Sagittarius. During his childhood, he became interested in music after listening to his father singing “Qurbani” and “Shabad Kirtan” at various gurdwaras. While in school, Savri often sang patriotic songs at school games and morning assemblies. Later, he received training in Indian classical music under his mentor Jaswant Bhawra. He then obtained a music degree from Randhill College in Kapurthala, Punjab, India.

Profession
In 1980, he immigrated to Canada from Punjab, India, and joined a fabric manufacturing company as a tailor. He used to work during weekdays and perform on weekends with various music groups like ‘Azad Group’ and ‘Ashoka Group’.
In 1985, he performed for the first time on television and sang the Punjabi song “Jad Lagiya Chotta Ishqiya Diya”. In 1990, he formed a music group called “Safri Boys” with five other members. He has lent his voice to several Punjabi songs such as “Kar Shukar Khuda Da” (1994), “Another Level” (1999), “Inferno” (2000), “Get Real” (2010) and “Jadon Mann Dole” Tera” (2014), gained huge popularity. In 1995, Balwinder released his first music album titled “Safri Bomb The Tumbi Remix” (1995). Some of his other popular Punjabi music albums include “Do Tikhiyaan Talwaran” (1997), “Tera Bhana” (2000), “Pao Bhangra” (2009) and “Mere Dil Te Alana Paya” (2010) .

In 2022, he underwent triple bypass surgery at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton, England, following a cardiac arrest. After the surgery, he suffered multiple complications that left him brain damaged and in a coma. After 86 days in a coma, his body began to react to something, but he failed to recover and died on July 26, 2022.
Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh took to Twitter to express his grief after his death. He tweeted,
We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Punjabi music legend Balwinder Safri today. My heartfelt condolences to his family and millions of Punjabi fans around the world. “

- In 2019, he was awarded the “Lifetime Achievement Award” by All Asia Television.
- In an interview, he shared how he got the name Safri, saying,
I was a notorious kid in school, not interested in learning. One of my teachers once laughed at me and said, “Tu hamesha safar them rehnda aa, bada safari bna firda aa.” From then on, my teachers started calling me “safari safari”. When I started my singing career, I put it in my name. “
