Bachelor Joey Graziadei Proposed to Kelsey with a Ring That Embodies Her ‘Radiance’ and ‘Uniqueness’ (Exclusive)

Bachelor star Joey Graziadei made sure to choose an engagement ring that could only go on his new fiancee Kelsey Anderson’s finger.

The Season 28 host tells PEOPLE exclusively that while he was mentally rehearsing the act of getting down on one knee to ask for the mystery bride-to-be’s hand many times, he knew for a while which hand he wanted to hold.

“I have never grabbed someone else’s hand, I want it to be known. [Hers] was the only hand I ever grabbed,” Joey told PEOPLE exclusively of imagining his proposal to Kelsey, which just happened on Monday night’s season finale.

So when Joey, 28, was choosing a ring to propose to her with, he said he knew it had to fit her hand – and luckily, the pair discussed the type of cut Kelsey liked best before choosing it.

“She explained that she likes the longer cut because she thinks it makes her fingers look longer, which I think is beautiful because she thinks it looks more feminine on her hand,” says Joey. “I think she could wear anything on her arm, and it would look beautiful.”

Matching what Kelsey, 25, wanted — and with the help of celebrity jewelry designer and Bachelor National Favorite Neil Lane — Joey chose an Art Deco-inspired ring that features an emerald-cut diamond in the center, flanked on either side by two shield-shaped side stones. The three diamonds at the center of the ring rest on a platinum band set with 18 brilliant-cut diamonds, with all the stones having a total of about 4 carats.

Lane tells PEOPLE that it was important for Joey to find a ring that captured “Kelsey’s sparkle, uniqueness, joy and sentimental nature,” especially since he “fired up” just when he was talking about how special his fiancée is.

“He shared that the jewelry she wears every day had sentimental value, including a piece from her late mother, so he didn’t take the ring selection lightly,” Lane tells PEOPLE exclusively. “He also revealed that he had a crush on Kelsey for a while.”

Jewelry designer, who has designed dozens of rings for Bachelor Nation, tells PEOPLE that the shield-shaped diamonds on the ring are significant because they represent the couple “protecting” each other. Kelsey tells PEOPLE that she knew Joey only had her in mind when he took the ring as soon as she saw it.

“I saw the ring, I thought, ‘Yeah, that’s always going to be me,'” she says, adding, “I think it’s stunning and I never want to take it off again.”

“Kelsey, we had the experience of a lifetime,” he told her on the beach. “I am reminded of how proud we should be of how strong a relationship we have built in such a short period of time. I knew early on that there was something different about you and I just wanted to know more. Whether it was walking the streets of Ronda or seeing New Orleans through your eyes, or even experiencing the beauty of Tulum itself, in everything we do we just enjoy each other, and sometimes it was seemingly easy.”

Joey acknowledged the struggles he and his bride-to-be faced during this season, but told her he knew it would work out in the end because he loved her.

“There’s something about you, you have that contagious energy that makes me smile,” he continued. “It’s a feeling I’ve never had before. I know we have built a very strong flame during this time and the only reason I know that flame will never go out is because you are in my life.”

He then got down on one knee and proposed with a Neil Lane Couture diamond ring of his choice, and Kelsey accepted.
