Rick Springfield will forever be young at heart.
Ahead of her 75th birthday on Aug. 23, the “Jessie’s Girl” singer told PEOPLE that the milestone feels like “a bit of a shock.”
“It makes you realize your age,” he says. “I still feel like I’m in my 20s in my head, and then you see people dying of old age and you say, ‘WoofI’m the same age as old people.'”
For her birthday, Springfield doesn’t want to blow out the candles on the cake — she’d rather have apple pie.
“I don’t like birthday cakes,” he says. “I like apple pie, so my wife usually makes an apple pie and sticks a few candles on it. I don’t know how you can fit 75 candles on an apple pie, so maybe we’ll make the number 75.”

Along with his dessert of choice, Springfield – who has been married to his wife Barbara Porter for 40 years – will celebrate his birthday on stage. He and Richard Marx are touring in Catoosa, Oklahoma that night.
“I’ll have a few thousand people singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to me, which is always fun,” he says. “I love what I do and I’m very grateful. I could be playing ‘Jessie’s Girl’ at the Holiday Inn and say, ‘Tip your waitresses, people, I’ll be right back with another ’80s hit.’ So I’m very grateful and grateful to the fans who are still interested, and I’m doing my best, I think I have the best band I’ve ever had, and I just want it to get better. If it starts to feel like I’m doing it just becausethen I won’t.”
For Springfield, being able to play his music on stage still hasn’t gotten old.
“I mean, travel is getting old,” he says. “I get paid to travel. They don’t pay me to play. These people react to the songs you wrote, and for a songwriter it’s very meaningful to hear that reaction 40 years after the song was written. It’s pretty amazing. I’m very grateful to be where I am .”
Springfield kicked off his birthday celebration in Las Vegas on August 17th. At the pool party, he served his “Jessie’s Girl” cocktail with his and Sammy Hagar’s Beach Bar rum.
“He’s a great guy,” Springfield says of Hagar. “He’s just down-to-earth and fun-loving and has a great gab. I always feel good when I’m around him. No pretense, no bullshit—. When you’ve been in the business as long as we have, I think you understand that you’re nothing special , you just went your own way and got the job done.”

They might say wisdom comes with age, but Springfield calls it “bulls—.”
“Wisdom comes from digging and looking inward,” he says. “It doesn’t come automatically.”
However, as he’s gotten older, Springfield says he’s come to realize more and more the importance of making himself “vulnerable.”
“We don’t want to be seen as anything less than the perfect image we think we project,” he says. “It’s very hard to break down that wall and make yourself vulnerable. We learned from the beginning that you have to protect yourself. The bully showed us that. The mean girl showed us that. The jerk boyfriend showed us that. The bad dad showed us that. You have to to protect in that armor and it’s great to get out of it, and it’s easier for me to get out of it as I get older, which I guess is one of the positives of turning 75.”
At 75, Springfield still works out every day, though he’s had to make some adjustments.
“Every time I play with my band, it’s a two-hour aerobic workout, so luckily I can do that,” he says. “I’ve got friends who’ve had hips replaced, knees replaced, shoulders replaced, and it’s actually amazing that it’s available, but that’s what counts when you’re working out. I can’t run anymore. I used to run all the time. I used to love running, but I can’t more because my knees can’t take it.”

As for what’s on his birthday wish list this year, Springfield — who plans to release a new song, “Lose Myself” in the fall — jokes “eternal life” and, more seriously, “perfect health.”
“We’re all going, so you better fucking enjoy yourself,” he says. “It won’t be forever, although we all kind of think we’ll be the ones to escape it. We won’t, so enjoy it now.”
Springfield has no plans to retire — “That’s up to the gods,” he jokes — and is grateful for what he can be proud of.
“I love my sons, there’s a lot of pride in that, I’m proud that I have a couple of songs that mean something to people because I’m a writer,” he says. “I’m proud of the few investments I made. I was smart and I’m proud of the woman I married. She’s amazing. I hope the birthdays don’t stop.”
