Barry Keoghan has deactivated his Instagram account and made his first public comment since breaking up with Sabrina Carpenter.
After deactivating the account, Keoghan, 32, posted a statement on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, December 7, to explain his departure. A source previously confirmed to PEOPLE on Dec. 3 that he and Carpenter, 25, “have decided to take a break” after a year of dating.
“I can only sit and take so much,” he said Saltburn the actor began his message, pointing out that his name was “trailing around the Internet”.
“I have to answer now because I’m getting to the point where too many lines are crossed. I deactivated mine [Instagram] because I can no longer let these things distract me from my family and my work,” he wrote.
The Dunkirk The actor noted that “no one should ever read” the messages he received, adding: “Absolute lies, hate, disgusting comments about my looks, my character, how I am as a parent and every other inhumane thing you can imagine.”

Keoghan also revealed that people harassed his mother and grandmother and “sat outside my little children’s doors and intimidated them.”
“It is an overreach,” he stressed.
Keoghan defended himself as a father, but also asked for decency on behalf of his son Brando, 2, who he shares with ex Alyson Sandro.
“Every day I work harder to push myself on every level to be the healthiest and strongest person I can be for that boy,” he explained. “I want to give him opportunities to learn, fail and grow. I want him to be able to look up to his dad, to have full confidence in me and to know that I will have his back no matter what.”
“I want you to [remember] that he has to read ALL of this about his father when he’s older,” he concluded. “Please be respectful to everyone.”
Days after Keoghan and Carpenter split, another source told PEOPLE that he’s “better than ever.”
“He’s the strongest and happiest and the best version of himself yet,” the source continued. “He’s been very resilient and triumphed through a lot to be in this place. He’s worked hard to get here and he’s staying focused – and even though he and Sabrina are on a break – it’s not setting him back in any way – he’s a lot courage.”
The insider said the actor was a “fantastic boyfriend” and was “very present” throughout the relationship, adding: “He worked very hard to be there for her when she needed someone the most.”

The source also addressed the infidelity rumors that have swirled since the breakup, insisting it wasn’t a factor in the split.
“He has always been very faithful to her from the beginning, there was no third party involved in their breakup or at any other point in their relationship. Reports to the contrary are completely fabricated,” the source added.
The “Espressa” actor and singer first sparked romance rumors when they were spotted out on a date together in December 2023 after meeting earlier that year at Paris Fashion Week.
The pair attended the 2024 Met Gala together, and Keoghan famously appeared in the music video for Carpenter’s “Please, Please, Please.”
At the time, Carpenter noted that the decision to cast her boyfriend was “unbiased.” “I thought, ‘Who’s the best actor I can find for this music video?’ And he was next to me in the chair,” she said while visiting the CBS Sunday Morning in October.

Keoghan also spoke highly of the singer while appearing on Sirius XM The Jess Cagle Show in November.

Keoghan recently wrapped Netflix Immortal man and now he’s filming Amazon’s Crime 101. He should also act Knock them down as Hurry up tomorrow opposite Jenna Ortega.
Carpenter, who has not commented on the split, is wrapping up her busy year with Netflix Christmas Without Meaning with Sabrina Carpenter.
