BBC Breakfast star Jon Kay quips back at viewer criticism following change to show

BBC Breakfast star Jon Kay wrote a hilarious response to a viewer who complained about Tuesday’s edition of the show.

In this episode, Jon hosted program segments from a primary school in Abergavenny, Wales to celebrate the launch of Britain’s biggest children’s writing competition, 500 Words.

During the show, Jon was joined by Hacker the dog and while many viewers loved seeing the iconic children’s puppet make an appearance, one person was not impressed.

On X they wrote: “Why have an obscene stuffed doll in front of children?”

Jon quickly responded to the comment, joking, “But having Hacker was okay?”, along with a winking emoji.

Fans took to the comments section to praise Jon for his response, with one person writing: “Tap @jonkay01. Loved the piece with Sir Lenny in the palace,” while another dropped a GIF showing a woman spitting her drink from laughter.

Many viewers, however, praised Hacker’s appearance on the program and wanted to see more of the doll.

One person wrote on X: “We need more hackers on BBC Breakfast!” while another added: “Watching BBC Breakfast and seeing Hacker causing chaos as always,” dropping a smiling emoji.

A third person tweeted: “Might start a petition so Hacker T Dog can be a permanent host.”

Elsewhere in the episode, a pre-recorded clip shows Jon and Sir Lenny Henry, one of the judges of the writing competition, traveling to Buckingham Palace, where the final will be held next year.

The duo sat down for afternoon tea and Jon gave Lenny a poem written by Queen Camilla, asking him to tell viewers how to enter the competition.

The royal signed the letter with the words: “The hunt is on. We are looking for a star. Good luck – Camilla R.”

First launched by radio presenter Chris Evans in 2011, the writing competition encourages children aged 5-7 and 8-11 to submit stories for a chance to win a host of prizes. Finalists will receive a £20 national book token, while bronze, silver and gold winners in each age group will have their stories read by celebrities.

Tuesday’s program is not the first time in recent weeks that Jon has left the studio for a new location.

In early September, Jon swapped Salford’s Media City for Langstone Harbor in Hampshire for a special edition of the show which looked at the problem of sewage pollution along the coast and our waterways.

After the broadcast, Jon shared a heartfelt tribute to his colleagues, whom he called a “talented, professional and beautiful group.”

“Incredibly lucky to be working with such a talented, professional and lovely group on #bbcbreakfast,” he wrote on Instagram.

“The morning outdoor broadcast in #Portsmouth was a huge technical and editorial challenge… We had to deal with some complex politics and new BBC data on sewage and water pollution – while also making the most of a beautiful sunny morning in #LangstoneHarbour,” He said. he added, before giving special mention to members of his team, including “amazing” weather forecaster Carol Kirkwood.
