Las Vegas restaurant cancels “buyout” Bluey event after receiving a legal letter from BBC Studios amid customer fury.

Dirt Dog Las Vegas has been criticized online after hosting an event centered on Australia’s favorite children’s TV show on Saturday 11 May.

Despite being touted as a day to “celebrate Bluey” with an “everyone’s marathon”. Bluey episodes, visits from “Bluey & Friends” characters, face painting and games, customers were left unsatisfied, calling the whole thing a “scam” on the restaurant’s Facebook page.

In a statement to PEOPLE, Dirt Dog now says they had planned another “Bluey is Back” event but had to cancel it after receiving a cease-and-desist letter from BBC Studios, which broadcasts the show.

“We deeply regret that recently Bluey the event fell short of the expectations we had set, and we let down those who were excited to see the real Bluey character mascot,” the statement read. “We understand how important this event was to many of our people, and we sincerely apologize for falling short of our promise.”

“Their trust and satisfaction is extremely important to us. We are taking immediate steps to correct this and are excited to announce that we are planning a new event to give you the experience you deserve,” the message reads.

“Unfortunately, the ‘Bluey is Back’ redemption event we had planned was also canceled due to a cease and desist letter we received from BBC Studios. Our new and improved event needed to feature a real mascot and more activities to ensure a memorable event and an enjoyable time for all.”

The restaurant insists that although it “can no longer create Bluey themed events,” their team members are “working to plan a family event for the summer to give our community what they deserve.”

“We want to thank our community for their understanding and continued support. We look forward to repaying them and enabling an event that truly meets their expectations,” the statement concludes.

BBC Studios confirms to PEOPLE that Dirt Dog has been sent a cease and desist letter. “Unauthorized and unofficial activities always risk diluting the good will that is shown as Bluey have built with their fans and audiences over a period of time – and as custodians of the brand we will always take the necessary steps to mitigate any negative impact,” BBC Studios tells PEOPLE in a statement.

“This is especially important when it comes to plays for children,” they add.

The update comes after client Maria Hardly spoke to PEOPLE about taking her children to the previous one Bluey event in a restaurant.

“There was a big crowd and it’s very clear that it was a matter of stealing money at the expense of the family’s interests,” she said. “A poorly planned and executed event that left so many children and families disappointed.”
