Ben Affleck Didn’t Want a ‘Relationship on Social Media’ with Jennifer Lopez but Learned to ‘Compromise’

When Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck rekindled their romance in 2021 after nearly two decades apart, Air the star had a request.

Lopez has 253 million followers on Instagram — and Affleck didn’t want their relationship to unfold in front of prying eyes, he says in her new Amazon Prime documentary The greatest love story never told.

“When we got back together, I said, ‘Listen, one of the things I don’t want is a social media relationship,'” recalls the 51-year-old actor and director. “Then I somehow realized that it was not fair to ask. It’s like marrying a ship captain and saying, ‘Well, I don’t like water.'”

Despite Affleck’s fear, the couple hit it off, getting engaged in April 2022 and marrying in Las Vegas that July. In the years since, Lopez, 54, has occasionally shared photos and videos of Affleck on her social media feeds, including a cute video of them singing Sam Cooke’s “(What A) Wonderful World” in a car in honor of his birthday in August.

“We’re just two people with different kinds of approaches trying to learn to compromise,” he says in the document.

And Lopez is open about how Affleck is uncomfortable in the spotlight, especially as an inspiration for her new album This is me… now and its accompanying visual film This is me… now: a love story.

“I do not think [Ben] it’s very pleasant when I do all this,” she says. “But he loves me, he knows I’m an artist and he’s going to support me in any way possible because he knows you can’t stop me from making the music I’ve made… he doesn’t want to stop me. But that doesn’t mean he’s comfortable being a muse.”

The documentary, directed by Jason Bergh, includes interviews with the star’s inner circle, as well as her producing partners and longtime collaborators.

In the documentary, Lopez reveals that Affleck gave her a very special gift on their first Christmas as a couple: a book that includes every letter and email they exchanged over two decades, which he called The Greatest Love Story Never Told.

Affleck accompanied Lopez to the Los Angeles premiere of her original film on February 13, and received an emotional thank you from the star when she took the stage before the screening.

“And then there’s the person who inspired me to do this, who’s inspired me my whole life. He’s just, he inspired the album 20 years ago and I know he hates that I’m doing this right now,” Lopez said.

“He just says, ‘Please shut up.’ Not! And I say no. I say, I love you and thank you for believing in me and helping me believe in myself,” she continued. “And helping me grow every day. Thank you for the family we have created and our children and everything you do for me.”

“You’ll never know what it’s like to be able to share this life and have you be my love. Thank you,” Lopez concluded.

In an interview with PEOPLE, director Dave Meyers — who hosted This is me… now: a love story — further described the couple’s special bond.

“I feel like I have true love in my life, and when I look at it, when I was in their house and I was intimate with them for several months, it seemed like they were very, very true love … It was real nice to see how strong and supportive they are of each other. That inspired me even in marriage,” he said. “Obviously Jen and her determination drove 95% of it, but I don’t know if Jen exists without Ben at this point.”
