Ben Meiselas has undoubtedly had one of the most extraordinary careers of any 33-year-old lawyer practising today, despite the fact that there are many well-known lawyers in the globe. He oversaw two of the most well-known court cases in recent memory as a partner and head of the civil litigation division at Geragos & Geragos, including Colin Kaepernick’s lawsuit and recent settlement with the National Football League (and his contract with Nike) and the successful class-action lawsuits against the disastrous Fyre Festival and its creator, Billy McFarland.
Meiselas is also general counsel for Ice Cube’s Big3 basketball league. He was recently appointed nationwide lead counsel in a $1 billion class action lawsuit against CenturyLink for overcharging subscribers. Meiselas is also heavily involved in charitable work, including Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights campaign, which educates young people about their constitutional rights and how to interact with police, as well as civil-rights litigation on behalf of those who have been sexually assaulted by police and other perpetrators.
Unusually, it all makes sense in light of his high school and college internships, which included time spent at Sean “Diddy” Combs’ Bad Boy Records and several years in the Washington, D.C., offices of then-Sen. Hillary Clinton and Rep. Steve Israel.
The Long Island native, who grew up going to meetings and recording sessions with his father, seasoned music-industry attorney Kenny Meiselas, says, “I don’t look at this as job — I’m passionate about all of these things. “I’m living out the dream I had when I was a child and saw what my dad was doing,” the speaker said.
The younger Meiselas’ employer, Mark Geragos, is effusive in his appreciation. “He’s an interesting combination of things in a lawyer,” he remarks. “He has dealmaking in his genes; his father is one of the best negotiators and dealmakers I’ve ever seen, but he also possesses all the excellent trial lawyer skills. Opposing counsel have approached me after watching him conduct depositions and cross-examinations and expressed disbelief at how young he is, saying that he has the skills of a trial lawyer with 25 years’ worth of experience.
