Trent Harrison (Benjamin Norris), with his flowing hair and admirable nonchalance, blew into the lives of Never Have I Ever fans like a pleasant breeze. A child can act stupid anywhere: at the grocery store front, on the Sherman Oaks High School playground, or even in the classroom. Trent’s playground is everywhere in Season 1.
In fact, Trent is so engrossed in the antics that we don’t hear him speak until the third episode of the YA sitcom when he introduces best friend Paxton (Darren Barnet) and Devi, the show’s lead and unexpected class project partner, as “a bunch of embeddable shit.”
Trent earns romantic hero status throughout all four seasons of Never Have I Ever thanks to his low-maintenance charm. Even Norris is surprised by his character’s progression from sharing junk food to courting the haughty drama queen Eleanor (Ramona Young).
The actor admits to Tudum that his initial expectations for the role of the hottest hangout at Sherman Oaks High School were for a four- or five-episode series. Although Trent was billed as “a really goofy best friend to a hot guy,” exactly as Norris portrayed him in the auditions, he too chose to focus on the teen’s honest and serious side.
“I wanted my whole way of working as Trent to be supporting Paxton no matter what,” Norris explains. Now that we’re in season 4, Trent really is on his own as a living, breathing being. He has his own life, as well as his own goals and concerns.
Since it was on the page, I knew I wanted to give the character an “I’ll do anything for Paxton” attitude. But since they said cut during the scene we were shooting for episode 3 of the first season, I was already in the middle of an impromptu line. I only replied, “Well, I’ll do anything for you, man,” when I met Darren’s eyes.
