Bethenny Frankel addressed the evolving perception of sobriety, saying she’s cut back on her drinking — but noted that people who say they don’t drink alcohol will still use drugs.
“I don’t want to move [alcohol] along with one more thing,” Frankel, 54, said in “The Noise” on the Jan. 10 episode of her podcast, Only B. She referred to the “California sober” trend, where people “want to eat and want to smoke weed” but abstain from alcohol.
But, The Real Housewives of New York alum said she’s noticed people don’t quit using marijuana.
“Like, ‘I just want to get a bag of cocaine, but no alcohol,'” she said. “I know people who, like, do crazy s—t. It’s like, ‘Let’s do heroin and get a face mask and drink water.’ And I’m not kidding at all. So to just be sober … you need other things.”

She said that she also abstains from alcohol: “I discover that, you know, I haven’t drunk alcohol for a minute. I have POTS, which makes me very dehydrated,” she said, referring to her ongoing battle with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), which affects heart rate. “One to two out of every 20 times I drink, it’s going to be very dangerous,” she explained.
Frankel continued, “There’s been a lot of change in the way the surgeon general and the health community views drinking, so it’s just something that needs to be talked about,” she said, referring to how surgeon general Dr. Vivek Murthy recently called for alcohol to have cancer warning labels.
Abstinence from alcohol also has its advantages, she said. “You really start to feel healthier and lighter, and your eyes are whiter and you sleep better after a while… You don’t stay out late doing stupid things.”

But socializing when you’re not drinking is a challenge, explained Frankel, who, in addition to pioneering margarita brand Skinnygirl, also has her own wine label, Forever Young. “I’ve tried non-alcoholic wines, which are all crap, by the way,” she said, saying before going out when you’re sober, you have to think, “What are we going to drink? What is our cocktail of choice? What’s our vibe?’ ”
Sobriety can also add a certain level of complication when you’re dating, she says, because “It’s hard to go out without drinking. It’s something to do,” she explained, adding that she spent New Year’s Eve sober on a date, saying, “That was a feat.”
