Bhupen Hazarika was born on September 8, 1926 in Sadiya, Tinsukia District, Assam, India. Bhupen was 85 years old at the time of his death. Today is Bhupen Ji’s 96th birth anniversary and Google has designed a doodle to remember and celebrate the legend’s birth anniversary.

The singer was acclaimed as a poet and filmmaker, who was most popular in West Bengal, India and Bangladesh. Bhupen was responsible for establishing the folk music culture of Assam and Northeast India in Hindi cinema.
He is widely known as Sudhakantha, which means nightingale or artist. Bhupen has received National Film Award (1975), Dada Saheb Phalke Award (1992), Padmashri (1977), Padma Vibhushan (2012) and Bharat Ratna (India’s highest civilian award), 2019 and many other prestigious awards.
On the occasion of his 96th birth anniversary, Union Minister Amit Shah shared the post and wrote:

Death of Bhupen Hazarika (cause of death)
Bhupen Ji was hospitalized at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital and Medical Research Institute in 2011 in Mumbai. He was admitted to intensive care on June 30, 2011, and died of multiple organ failure on November 5, 2011.
Bhupen Ji’s body was laid to rest at the Judges Field in Guwahati and burnt to ashes on November 9, 2011, near the Brahmaputra River in the country. About half a million people attended Bhupen Ji’s funeral.

Bhupen went to Sonaram High School in Guwahati and Dhubri Government High School and matriculated from Tezpur High School in 1940. After that he completed Secondary Arts from Cotton College in 1942, B.A. in 1944 and M.A. in 1946. Ph.D. in Political Science from Hindu University Banaras.
He worked for a short time at All India Radio, Guwahati. After that, he received a scholarship from Columbia University and sailed to New York in 1949. In New York, Bhupen received his doctorate. (1952) on his thesis based on “Projects for the Preparation of Indian Elementary Education for the Use of Audio-Visual Techniques in Adult Education”.
