Career
Bill Cowher made his NFL debut in 1979 as a linebacker for the Philadelphia Eagles. The following year, he signed with the Cleveland Browns. After three seasons with the Browns, he was traded to the Eagles, where he spent the next two seasons. While with the Eagles, he broke Jeff Fisher’s leg, which forced Fisher to retire and start coaching.
Cowher began his coaching career at the age of 28 as an assistant for the Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs under legendary coach Marty Schottenheimer. Cowher also took a lower salary to become a coach than he would have made with the Eagles in 1985 because he saw his future in coaching. In 1985-86, he was the specials coach for the Browns, and in 1987-88, he was the secondary coach. He was the defensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs in 1989.
In 1992, he was named head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Under his leadership, the performance of the Pittsburgh Steelers improved and reached new heights, as they managed to make the playoffs for the first time in six years. Cowher became the youngest Super Bowl coach when he won it in 1995. Bill was the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers for 15 years.
During his tenure, the team won eight championships, ten playoff berths, 21 playoff appearances, six AFC Championship appearances and two Super Bowl appearances. He became one of only six coaches in NFL history to win at least seven championships. The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl on February 5, 2006. After 15 seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he resigned.
On February 5, 2007, he agreed to join The NFL Today as a studio analyst. Cowher became a keynote speaker for the ‘National Agents Alliance’ at their leadership conference in July 2010. He also played the head coach of the football team in The Dark Knight Rises. Bill was announced live on CBS that he will be inducted into the Pro Hall of Fame by President David Baker on January 11, 2020.

In 1981, Bill met and married his first wife, Kaye Young, also a graduate of North Carolina. Kaye Young, along with her twin sister Faye, played professional basketball for the New York Stars (now defunct) in the Women’s Professional Basketball League. Kaye is mentioned in Karra Porter’s book Mad Seasons: The Story of the First Women’s Professional Basketball League, 1978–1981. Kaye Young, 54, died of skin cancer on July 23, 2010. Meagan, Lauren and Lindsay are the couple’s three daughters.
