After serving the department for more than two decades, Hoover’s untimely departure leaves a void that will be deeply felt within the firefighting community. As we reflect on his life and dedication to the profession, we remember him as a true hero and advocate for firefighter safety.

Throughout his impressive 23-year career in the fire service, Bill Hoover has given his unwavering dedication to the Kirkland Fire Department (KFD), the only department he has had the privilege of serving since 1992.
Originally from Skyway, his passion for firefighting was fueled by his closest friend’s firefighter father, sparking a lifelong interest in the noble profession. Taking his first steps as a volunteer at a nearby fire station, Hoover wholeheartedly embraced the challenges and rewards of firefighting, even staying with the crew until he was 21.
Recognized as Officer of the Year in 2011, Hoover’s exceptional leadership led to his well-deserved promotion to the rank of Captain within the KFD. As a key member of the East Metro Training Group, he has played a key role in the development and refinement of firefighting training standards, which are continually evolving to incorporate the latest safety practices and address emerging hazards.
With a deep commitment to firefighter safety, Hoover actively promoted measures to protect the health and well-being of his colleagues during and after the response. Recognizing the potential risks posed by carcinogens and infections encountered in the line of duty, he championed efforts to limit exposure and improve disease prevention protocols.
Inspired by personal experience, after bravely battling thyroid cancer in 2010, Hoover partnered with Shoreline Fire Battalion Chief Eric Monroe to found the Washington chapter of the Firefighter Cancer Support Network. Furthermore, his tireless advocacy led to the creation of the Personal Injury, Illness and Exposure Reporting System (PIIERS), empowering firefighters to diligently monitor incidents for health care purposes.

With boundless enthusiasm, he plunged into the world of firefighting as a volunteer at a nearby fire station, and eventually became an integral part of the team, with whom he stayed until he was 21 years old.
In 2011, a year marked by his outstanding contributions, Hoover was honored as Officer of the Year and deservedly promoted to the esteemed rank of Captain. His commitment to advancing firefighting standards was evident through his active involvement in the East Metro Training Group, working with the Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, Mercer Island, Woodinville, Bothell and Shoreline fire departments to develop comprehensive training guidelines for fire recruits.

It is with a heavy heart that I announce the devastating news of the passing of Bill Hoover, beloved Kirkland Fire Battalion Chief, beloved husband, father, grandfather and dear friend. Tragically, Bill and his wife were taken from us in a car accident, just as he was on the verge of entering a new chapter in life, with retirement on the horizon.
My last memory of him is a warm smile and a quick “hello” as we crossed paths at the scene of the fire. It’s hard to understand that my friend is gone, leaving us too soon. May he rest in eternal peace.
