Billie Eilish Compares Her Frequent Social Media Usage to Smoking 'Cigarettes': 'It's Really a Problem'

Billie Eilish compares the use of social networks to another bad habit.

In an interview with Complex released Thursday, Dec. 5, the “Birds of a Feather” singer opened up about her complicated relationship with social media — and why she compares it to smoking. Eilish, 22, said she was “from that s–t” when asked if she was on Xu (formerly Twitter). “And I quit Instagram and Tiktok a few months ago, which was great,” she revealed.

However, while on the road, Eilish said, “I really like interacting with the fans while I’m on tour,” and not being on social media makes that difficult. “I like to see all the videos and all the angles. I like to see how people feel and think about the series. If I think something looks different, I want to change it,” she explained.

The singer continued: “So I go on the internet to see the videos I want to see, but then it pulls me in.” And what happens when the “problem” starts. “Then I get all screwed up and stuck. So I’m back to it, but I’m trying to quit. Those are my cigarettes,” she said. – That’s really a problem.

When asked about the positives of her time on social media, such as holding Instagram Q&A sessions with fans, the “Bad Guy” singer said she enjoys those interactions — mostly. “Some of it is great and I love it and I appreciate it. But then again, people make things like that very difficult. It’s sad for me. Some people ruin it for other people.”

“I feel conflicted about it,” she said at the time. “I don’t always want to tell the world the intimate details of my life, I don’t want people to know everything about me, but at the same time I want people to feel seen and heard if I’ve experienced the same things as me.”

However, Eilish said, sometimes she doesn’t want to talk about what she’s going through. “It’s a heavy responsibility because it’s also not my responsibility. I don’t owe anyone anything.”

Previously, in 2020, the “Happier Than Ever” singer said she stopped reading Instagram comments because they were “ruining” her life. “It’s much worse now than it’s ever been,” she told the BBC, adding: “It’s weird: the cooler things you do, the more people hate you. That’s crazy.”
