Billy Crystal Recalls How Princess Diana Reacted to Meg Ryan’s Fake Orgasm in When Harry Met Sally

Billy Crystal remembers the late Princess Diana — and her unforgettable laugh!

While promoting his new series Ago on View On Wednesday, October 23, the comedy legend, 76, revealed the late Princess of Wales’ reaction to When Harry met Sallythe most famous scene – which, if they were dating, would have ruined the royal’s chances of a second date, he joked.

Princess Diana, who Crystal met at the 1989 premiere of the romantic comedy in London, was an “amazing” royal, he told the hosts. And her reaction to Meg Ryan’s iconic fake orgasm scene? It’s even harder to believe – at least the way the comedian tells it.

“We’re here,” he recalled. “So we sit together. She is on my left and Meg is on her left. so that’s me [director Rob Reiner]princess [Diana] and then Meg. So we sit together on the balcony in the theater. And the horns blare as we enter, which happens in every movie theater. And Meg’s like – she’s so cute – she’s leaning forward like, “Can you believe who she is?” That’s crazy.”

Then, the cast’s iconic (and somewhat NSFW) scene — in which Sally (played by Ryan) loudly fakes an orgasm in a delicate cabin to prove Harry (played by Crystal) — begins with Diana wedged between them, Crystal recalled.

“And then the deli scene happens and the whole audience below us is now looking back to see how the princess will react to Meg faking an orgasm,” he explained, adding that he himself had no idea.

“So she started laughing — a big laugh,” Crystal said of Diana, mimicking a deep, guttural laugh.

Diana’s laugh, he said, was “a laugh I would never see again if we were in a relationship.”

“Because I would, ‘Laugh. She is beautiful, but laughter!’ “, he joked. “But it was spectacular, a spectacular evening, and it was great to meet her.”

The actor is “so proud” of the series and “had the best time” filming it, he told the hosts.

“It’s something I’ve been working on for years, and I never thought I’d be playing this pediatric psychiatrist dealing with this incredibly traumatized little boy,” he said. “But to live in this world and make a surreal psychodrama thriller was absolutely thrilling to me.”

Plus, he noted, it’s a very different vibe from over-the-top fake orgasms and emotional New Year’s speeches When Harry met Sally.

“This is far from ‘I’ll have what she has,'” he said. “And I couldn’t be happier with that.”
