Bindi Irwin's Daughter Grace Mistakes Her Brother Robert for Their Dad Steve, Calls Him 'Grandpa Crocodile'

Bindi Irwin Grace Warrior’s daughter sometimes confuses her family members!

On Saturday, May 11, Bindi, 25, and mom Terri Irwin attended the Wildlife Warriors Steve Irwin Gala at the Bellagio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, honoring the legacy of late wildlife conservationist Steve Irwin. At the event, Terri, 59, revealed that 3-year-old Grace is sometimes mistaken for her uncle Robert Irwin — who recently returned from filming in South Africa I’m A Celebrity: Get Me Out of Here — for the late grandfather Steve.

And the sweetest part? Grace mistakenly calls her uncle “Grandpa Crocodile”, a nickname she uses for Steve, who was also known as “Crocodile Hunter”. Terri noticed a strong resemblance between Robert and Steve and described her granddaughter’s observation of the resemblance as “really special.”

Steve died in 2006 at the age of 44 after being stabbed in the chest by a stingray while filming a documentary at Batt Reef, near Queensland, Australia.

Although her father died when she was just a girl, Bindi spoke about what she learned about parenting from both parents as Saturday’s gala paid tribute to Steve’s legacy.

“The best thing our parents ever did for us was to be there for us, no matter what was going on in the world, with our conservation work. Mom and Dad were there for Robert and me 100% of the time,” Bindi told the crowd at event, noting that Steve and mom Terri Irwin never put their work on wildlife before reading bedtime stories to their children.

“Life is full of ups and downs, but if you can count on your parents to love and support you on your journey in life, that’s everything, and I hope I can do that for Grace,” he added. Dancing with the stars champion, who shares Grace with husband Chandler Powell.

You treat people with kindness, respect, love and loyalty when your parents show you that too, she continued about the example she wants to set for her daughter.

As for what Bindi teaches Grace about her “crocodile grandfather,” Steve has been in the girl’s life since she was a baby via video.

“We have so many documentaries about dad and we always play them for Grace,” Bindi told PEOPLE in 2022.

“It’s so fun to watch her study it,” she added. “I didn’t realize how much Dad’s passion for life and his animated facial expressions — I mean, they fascinate her.”
