Joe Namath Career
When Joe Namath made the biggest guarantee in professional sports history, he was already well-known. But after he and his team received their Super Bowl payout, “Broadway Joe” briefly held the title of most famous person on earth.
Namath stood by his prediction that the Jets, an 18-point underdog, would overcome the Colts in Super Bowl III by directing an offence that confused Baltimore’s formidable defence. The Jets’ defence, which resulted in five turnovers, including three interceptions of quarterback Earl Morrall, the NFL’s MVP that year, was crucial to the surprise victory.
Namath added to the legend of professional football after the Jets’ 16-7 triumph by dancing off the Orange Bowl pitch while pointing his index finger to the sky. One of the primary factors in Namath’s career being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985 was his performance on that particular day.
We choose to look at five things about Namath that you might not know in honour of his 80th birthday. One of them is a startling fact about Namath’s greatest work, a fact that Namath himself didn’t learn about until decades later.
Namath (Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania), George Blanda (Youngwood, Pennsylvania), Johnny Unitas (Pittsburgh), Joe Montana (New Eagle, Pennsylvania), Dan Marino (Pittsburgh), and Jim Kelly (Pittsburgh/East Brady, Pennsylvania) are the six quarterbacks from Western Pennsylvania who are now inscribed in the Canton, Ohio, quarterbacks’ hall of fame. The six quarterbacks were recognised collectively in Pittsburgh in 2015.
Namath contributed to the Crimson Tide’s 10-1 record and the second of renowned coach Paul “Bear” Bryant’s six national championships during his final year at Alabama. Despite having modest passing numbers, Namath had a 29-4 record as Alabama’s starting quarterback. Namath’s knees ultimately cost him his NFL career, although he had no such problems in college, where he rushed for 15 touchdowns, including six in the 1964 season.
Namath was selected by the New York Jets with the No. 1 overall pick in the 1965 AFL Draught, bypassing the NFL and the St. Louis Cardinals in favour of the Jets. Namath signed with “Gang Green” after getting a $427,000 contract, which at the time was the largest rookie salary in pro football. Namath, an AFL passing champion in 1966, was a Pro Bowler in 1965.
Namath led the AFL that season with 28 interceptions and became the first quarterback in professional football history to surpass 4,000 passing yards in 1967. The superb receiving tandem of Hall of Famer Don Maynard and All-Pro George Sauer, who caught a combined 146 passes for 2,323 yards, was fully utilised by Namath.
