Callaghan joined the USMNT in 2019 and initially held the position of strategy analyst before being promoted to assistant coach. He has been a part of the technical staff the longest.

Since Gregg Berhalter’s contract terminated during the World Cup in Qatar last year, where the squad advanced to the round of 16, the United States has been without a full-time manager. The team’s sporting director, Matt Crocker, stated that he hopes to fill the permanent position before the end of the summer, and Berhalter is still a candidate.

In the coming week, Callaghan will activate his first roster in preparation for the Nations League semifinals on June 15 in Las Vegas.

Callaghan stated in a statement, “I recognise the importance of the role and am honoured to have the opportunity to build upon the accomplishments this group has accomplished over the last four years. Together, we have established a solid culture and a clear vision for our ideal game, and we intend to expand on this development.

Under Berhalter, who has the highest winning % of any permanent manager in USMNT history, the Americans won both tournaments.

Prior to working with the national team, Callaghan, 41, spent seven years with the Philadelphia Union, first with the Union Academy and then for five years as Jim Curtin’s first team assistant coach. He spent four seasons as a player at Ursinus College and two seasons at Villanova as an assistant.

Hudson was 2-1-2 during his brief tenure as manager after Berhalter was replaced as U.S. Soccer looked into the 1991 domestic abuse incident and exonerated Berhalter of any wrongdoing. During that time, the team defeated El Salvador in the Nations League and drew 1-1 with Mexico.

The location of Hudson’s new coaching position has not been made public, but he is leaving the national team to pursue it. Previously, Hudson, 42, oversaw national teams in Bahrain and New Zealand.
