Bobbi Charlton News

The family of Sir Bobby Charlton has spoken of other fatalities and tragic cases of dementia. Gordon, the brother of a football great and former PNE manager, passed away at the age of 79 following a battle with dementia and cancer.

The younger of the Charlton brothers, Tommy, 76, has also been diagnosed with dementia, according to information provided to the Daily Star Sunday. Sadly, the same two conditions also beset his brother Jack before his death in July 2020 at the age of 85. He is believed to be in the early stages of the degenerative condition right now.

The England team that won the 1966 World Cup included Sir Bobby and Jack. The former PNE player, 85, was unable to attend Gordon’s goodbye because of his severe dementia.

Gordon passed away from cancer and dementia approximately a month ago, according to Jack’s son John, 63. The youngest brother, Tommy, suffers from dementia. Although Bobby wasn’t feeling well, my mother went. When someone in the family passes away, it is never pleasant. John discussed Gordon’s passing while visiting his Cambois, Northumberland, home. He mentioned how the four Charlton siblings had now been affected by dementia.

The 63-year-old promotes the need for additional study into the relationship between headers and dementia. He emphasised, though, that there isn’t enough proof to connect headers to the dementia curse that runs in his family.

Two of the Charlton brothers never headed a ball, he claimed. “The professor who was caring for my father claimed that there is a test you can perform on the brain, but you have to conduct that when someone is dead, and only then can you establish a correlation between heading and dementia. I’m unaware of the link between heading the ball and dementia, and I haven’t yet come across any proof or hard data to support it.

Yes, my 85-year-old dad had dementia, but that wasn’t the cause of his passing. My dad headed the ball a lot, John continued. Bobby merely lightly headed it. Tommy never played, so Gordon would have headed it a little bit.

Most dementia sufferers die as a result of other factors, not dementia itself. Despite having dementia, my father passed away from lymphoma.

Given that other members of England’s 1966 World Cup winning team had been identified as having neurological disorders and had passed away from them, there has been significant conjecture that Jack’s dementia was caused by his frequent headers.
