Spanish police sources claim the arrest was made after a body believed to be that of missing John was found on the Costa Blanca in the early afternoon.

Family lawyer Kevin Winters said John’s father Billy George received a call from Spanish detectives at around 5pm today to say his son’s remains had been found.

Winters said in a statement: “Mr Billy George has been told that his son’s body is now in the morgue, awaiting official identification.

“The family is both shocked and relieved by this latest news.

“This brings to an end the extremely painstaking process of searching for the body.”

An investigation into the murder has been launched, reports Sky News.

The Spanish Civil Guard, which is leading the search for John, has yet to make an official statement about the find or arrest.

But a source close to the ongoing investigation said the man’s body was found in Rojales near Torrevieja, about a 45-minute drive south of Alicante.

An autopsy should be performed.

The Spanish Civil Guard has been called in for comment.

He was last in contact with friends and family on December 14 and was reported missing four days later after failing to board a flight home.

John’s worried family flew to Alicante to join the frantic search.

It was announced yesterday that they returned home on Sunday after scouring hundreds of miles of country.

Speaking before the discovery of the body earlier today, Darren said of his brother: “A lot of people have stopped and are showing us their support.

“We can also see the support from home, which is fantastic, and that’s what gives us the energy and strength to actually go forward.

“But searches can be very frustrating because we end up not getting answers. It is very frustrating and we are left very angry.

“Someone knows where John is. They should give it up and give the location, even if it’s done anonymously.

“This isn’t going to stop and we’re certainly not going to leave until we get John’s body.

“We got John’s body, we’re taking the next flight out of here. Someone has the answers and we’re not leaving Spain without John’s body.”
