Greater Manchester Police have confirmed that the baby’s remains have been found.
Speaking to reporters at a press conference near the scene this evening, Chief Deputy Neil Blackwood said: “Tragically, today we found what we believe to be the remains of a young baby on Ravenscraig Road in Salford.
“We have the scene and you are likely to see an increased police presence in the local area as we carry out inquiries to understand the circumstances.
“At this stage we are following several lines of inquiry and working with local partner agencies to understand who this baby could be, how long she has been here and how she sadly died – we are now calling this baby, Baby A.
“This is all extremely sensitive and this investigation should be treated with the utmost care it deserves, and it will take time.”
He added: “Around 12.30pm, a person walking their dog found the sad remains of Baby A.”
Chf Supt could not confirm Baby A’s ethnicity or gender.
He added that the results of the autopsy should be published in the next two days.
Members of the public are being urged to come forward with any information in an urgent appeal to find Baby A’s parents.
“We know this news will devastate our communities, and while we don’t have all the answers to these questions yet, I want to assure residents that we will do everything we can to find out what happened here,” he continued.
“The most important thing for us right now is to find answers for this baby and I would ask anyone who has any information to contact us.
“Even the smallest detail can be crucial for our investigation.
“If you have seen anyone in the area over the past few days or know who the parents might be, please call us as soon as possible.
“As soon as we are in a position to confirm further details of the circumstances, we will do so.
“I encourage people to call 101 and quote log 1319 or they can do so anonymously on Crimestoppers, which is 0800 555 111.”
A forensics tent could be seen in the area earlier today with a heavy police presence.
The North West Ambulance Service was also in attendance, along with forensics.
The snow-covered site is cordoned off while police investigate.
Officers were also seen behind industrial buildings on nearby Ravenscraig Road.
