Bonnie Crombie News

According to Bonnie Crombie, who is getting ready to compete for leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, she will not be resigning as mayor of Mississauga.

Announcing on Monday that she had created a “exploratory committee” to consider running for provincial Liberal leader, the long-serving mayor of the city west of Toronto said the move was official.

She was a federal Liberal Member of Parliament from 2008 to 2011, and she has held the top position in Mississauga since 2014. Crombie revealed in an interview with CP24 on Tuesday morning that she won’t be giving up her commission to compete for provincial leadership. Instead, she will focus on her campaign during the evenings and weekends.

I’ll be present when a crucial decision needs to be made. And I’ll be ready to take charge if necessary as mayor of Mississauga, Crombie assured. Crombie confirmed that she would leave her city to help the transition to a new form of government led by a new mayor if she succeeds in her bid to become the next leader of the Ontario Liberal Party. At that time, Crombie continued, either a by-election would be called or the city council would decide to rotate the office.

Speaking with people, they told me, “If you are the one who can make a difference and apply that strong fiscal management style that you have, the transparency, and the accountability that you operate with in Mississauga across the province to other municipalities, then we would support you moving forward.

In conclusion, Crombie declared that she would concentrate her leadership campaign on “addressing what’s broken” in Ontario. Our medical system has to be fixed. Our educational system and our teachers need to be improved. As the mayor of the third-largest city in Ontario, I naturally deal with the download into municipalities on a daily basis, but it has to stop, she said on Tuesday.

The Doug Ford administration declared this week that Peel Region would be abolished, thereby reducing Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon to single-tier cities over the following two years.

Along with her predecessor Hazel McCallion, Crombie has long championed this cause, which she ran for office on in October 2022.

With more than 77% of the vote, she was re-elected as Mississauga’s mayor for a third time in October 2022. Her reelection campaign, in large part, was focused on breaking away from Peel Region.
