On May 7, 2023, he appeared for the NEET-UG entrance exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). On June 13, 2023, the results were announced. He won the first place in NEET-UG 2023 with a score of 720 points (out of 720 points), with a percentile of 99.999901. He shared first place with Prabanjan J from Tamil Nadu, who also scored 720 marks in the exam.
According to a senior NTA official, if two candidates have the same score, the ranking will be decided as per the tie rule, i.e. the candidate with higher biological score will be ranked higher than the other candidates. If the biological markers are also the same, the rule applies to chemistry and then to physics. If the scores remain the same, older candidates receive higher rankings. After passing the exam, Varun mentioned in an interview that he plans to study Bachelor of Medicine in Internal Medicine (MBBS) from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. He said,

In June 2023, he won the second place in the Engineering Agriculture and Medical Common Entrance Test (EAMCET) with a total score of 151 points.
