Boris Diaw’s mother is Elisabeth Rifiaud, known as one of the greatest centers in the history of French women’s basketball. She was inducted into the French Basketball Hall of Fame.
His father, Issa Diaw, is the Senegalese high jump champion. Diaw also has a half-brother, Paco Diaw, who initially played basketball as a guard at Georgia Tech before transferring to Lee University, a larger university within the NAIA. From 2001 to 2003, Boris Diaw played for the Pau-Orthez team in France’s top professional league LNB Pro A. In 2002, he participated in the league’s All-Star Game and Slam Dunk Contest. In 2003, Diaw was selected by the Atlanta Hawks with the 21st overall pick in the NBA draft. On July 10, 2003, he joined the Eagles on a multi-year contract. In August 2005, he was traded to the Phoenix Suns along with two future first-round picks in exchange for Joe Johnson. Diaw primarily plays as a forward and is known for being able to play in multiple positions due to his passing skills and scoring ability. In the 2005-06 season, he started as a substitute, replacing the point guard, playing small forward, and later played center due to injuries within the team. On December 10, 2008, Diaw was traded to the Charlotte Bobcats along with Raja Bell and Sean Singletary in exchange for Jason Richardson and Jared Dudley. During the NBA lockout in 2011, Diaw joined the French JSA Bordeaux team. In December 2011, he returned to the Charlotte Bobcats. On March 21, 2012, the Bobcats waived him, and two days later, he joined the San Antonio Spurs for one season. On July 12, 2012, he renewed his contract with the Spurs, signing a two-year contract worth $9.2 million and helped the Spurs enter the 2013 NBA Finals against the Miami Heat.
On July 15, 2014, Diaw renewed his contract with the Spurs and signed a three-year contract worth $22 million. On August 1, 2015, he represented the African team in the 2015 NBA Africa Exhibition Game. On July 8, 2016, Diaw was traded to the Utah Jazz along with a 2022 second-round pick and cash. In November 2016, he missed the game due to a leg injury and was waived by the Jazz on July 13, 2017.
On September 17, 2017, he joined the French Levallois Mets for the 2017-18 season, participating in the LNB Pro A and European Cup.
Diaw won the FIBA European U-18 Championship with the French youth national team in 2000. In July 2006, he became the captain of the French national team and won a bronze medal at the 2005 European Basketball Championship. He led the team to participate in the 2006 FIBA World Championship and won the 2013 EuroBasket gold medal. In 2014, he led the team to a bronze medal at the FIBA World Cup without Tony Parker.

In 2009, Boris Diaw joined the French JSA Bordeaux basketball club as vice president and shareholder. The next year, he became the company’s president. He resigned from this position in 2017. Dior founded UKIND, an environmentally friendly clothing company, in 2010. On July 4, 2019, he was appointed as the new President of the Metropolitan 92 Basketball Club, succeeding Jean-Pierre Aubry.

- In Phoenix, Boris Diaw became a versatile basketball player, able to play from center to point guard. He was nicknamed “3D” because he excelled at many parts of the game (he loved “driving, passing, defending”) and because of his jersey number (3) and last name.
- Diaw is close friends with Tony Parker, another French NBA player from the Spurs. They once lived together, and when Parker married actress Eva Longoria, Dior was the best man.
- In 2005, Dior founded a charity called Babac’Ards. It organizes sports activities for young people in Senegal and helps them gain education.
