Bowen Yang Is ‘Beyond’ Nervous for His Parents to See His Raunchy Comedy Dicks: The Musical (Exclusive)

Bowen Yang isn’t sure if he’s ready for his parents to see his outrageous new comedy Dicks: The Musical.

The film, about two grown-up business rivals (co-writers Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson) who realize they’re twins and conspire to reunite their long-estranged parents (Megan Mullally and Nathan Lane), is filled with red-hot sex scenes, crude humor and flying genitalia. .

Emmy nominated Saturday night live star, 32, plays God, the film’s narrator who also takes drugs, and joins the cast for a spectacularly NSFW musical number. It’s all extremely disrespectful.

So how nervous is Yang for his mom Meng and dad Ruilin to take it all in?

“More than what the human brain can chemically display,” he jokes to PEOPLE. “I have no idea if it will even fall on their radar, but I’m sure some Chinese aunt will stop them at Costco and tell them about it and find me.”

Joking aside, Yang told PEOPLE in 2021 that his parents, both immigrants from China, now support his career in show business, even though they hoped their son would become a doctor. (Yang took pre-med courses while an undergraduate at New York University.)

“There was a nice change where they went, ‘Great job,'” he said of their view of his fame.

“They were just encouraging in the purest sense of the word. It’s not like I’m winning [SNL] sketch ideas from them, and they know what the boundaries are,” he added.

“They know that I fought it hard and that it means a lot to them, too. They think, ‘Wow, he made it.’ And my mom said to me recently, she said, ‘Bowen, you’re very lucky to be doing this.’ And I said: ‘I know mom’.”

Additionally, he began working with comedy legends Mullally and Lane and hip-hop superstar Megan Thee Stallion. “There were a million reasons to be delighted,” he adds.

Costar Lane, meanwhile, previously told PEOPLE that he “wasn’t sure” what to say about the film when he received the script. “It was outrageous,” he said.

However, once he met Sharp and Jackson, “I fell in love with them,” he added. “This whole young generation, they’re not really worried about what you think, what your judgment is about what they’re doing.”

“To be a part of something like this at a time when books are banned and there’s a whole ‘Don’t say gay’ campaign. . . I just thought, for that reason alone, it was worth doing,” Lane continued. “It will be interesting to see what the reaction will be. There are people who are just waiting to be offended.”

Dicks: The Musical is now playing in select theaters and opens wider on Friday.
