David Njoku Shares First Pictures of Burned Face After Fire Pit Accident

David Njoku is done hiding behind a mask after burning his face in a domestic accident.

On Wednesday, the 27-year-old Cleveland Browns tight end posted a gallery of photos on Instagram, including two that showed the extent of his injuries from the fire.

It is the first time Njoku has shown his face publicly in the 12 days since the incident. He’s covered it before, like on Oct. 1 when he walked into the Cleveland Browns stadium wearing a beige alien-inspired mask that covered everything but his eyes.

His social media feed did not include a caption, but two pictures he shared showed how his recovery is progressing.

The first selfie was taken while a calm-faced Njoku was sitting in the car, with the hood of a camouflage T-shirt pulled over his head. Although black sunglasses covered his eyes, the video showed visible skin damage on his forehead, cheeks, nose, lips and chin. The reflection of his glasses showed similar injuries on his right arm, while his left arm was wrapped in a bandage.

In another picture, Njoku was all smiles as he grinned at the camera. The irritated parts of his skin and lips were considerably numb. His face was also shiny, apparently from sweat.

Friends, fans and followers opened the comments section to share their support for the athlete. “I didn’t know it was that bad. I can only thank God he’s still fine,” one commented, while another shared his amazement at the player’s ability to get back on the pitch, “Brah, playing a game after this is crazy.”

Nijoku’s teammates also gave their support. “Respect!!” Browns cornerback Greg Newsome II wrote. Running back Kareem Hunt mocked the accident, adding two flame emojis.

Njoku’s accident happened on September 29 while he was lighting a fire in his backyard, according to ESPN.

The next day, the Browns announced that the team’s tight end had been added to the injury report ahead of the Oct. 1 game against the Ravens. He was listed as questionable “after suffering burns to his face and hand during a domestic accident,” Browns officials wrote in a message on their website.

Other details about the severity of Njoku’s injuries were not released at the time.

Although it was not clear whether Njoku would play, he made it clear at X that he would be on the field. “Meso is weak,” he wrote, before listing the team’s nickname. “See you tomorrow #DawgPound.”

Unfortunately for the Browns, they fell short against the Ravens, losing the game in a 28-3 loss. But Njoku — who covered his face with another mask during warmups — played well, catching six times for 46 yards.

“The way he played was unbelievable to me considering what he went through — not just passing, but running,” Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters after the game. “He was the first to pick his teammates off the ground. He felt like he was on every single play. He was a warrior. It was impressive to watch.”

Earlier this week, Njoku revealed that he is launching a merchandise line called “Withstand”.

A portion of the money from each sale, he said, would be donated to the American Burn Association.

The Browns next face the San Francisco 49ers on Oct. 15 in Cleveland.
