Boy, 17, dies in ‘workplace accident’ on Bury industrial estate as two men, 36 & 41, arrested

A 17-YEAR-OLD youth has died following a “workplace accident”‘ on an industrial estate.

Two men, aged 36 and 41, were arrested following the horror in Bury, Greater Manchester, just after 10am today.

Fire crews and EMS were also called to attend the incident.

A 41-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving offenses and manslaughter, while a 36-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.

Crime scene investigators were seen filming evidence in the area at lunchtime.

A number of people were seen coming and going from the scene throughout the afternoon, while the wider industrial area was busy with businesses open.

Eyewitnesses reported a large presence of police and emergency services after the tragedy.

One worker said the incident was described to them as an “accident”, but other workers in the area said they were informed that someone had “been hit in the head”.

A worker at a waste disposal site next to the scene said: “Ambulances tried to enter the yard.

“They said obviously someone was hurt. A lot of police came and we took them down.”

Officers remained at the scene throughout Thursday as police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) carried out investigations.

North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) also confirmed it was called to attend at 10:04am.

Several police cars were seen parked on private land at the end of Tile Street, behind the fenced area.

A joint investigation between GMP and the HSE is now underway to establish the full circumstances of the teenager’s death.

A GMP spokesman said: “At around 10.10am today (Thursday 8 February 2024), officers were called to a report of a welfare concern at a business in Tile Street, Bury.

“The 17-year-old was found to have been involved in a workplace accident and despite the best efforts of the emergency services, he was unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene.

“A 41-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving offenses and manslaughter, and a 36-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.

“A joint investigation between GMP Bury CID and the Health and Safety Executive has been launched to examine the circumstances leading to the boy’s death. Inquiries are ongoing at this stage.”
