Boyfriend should get half the jackpot – I’ve seen the CCTV, says shop worker who sold £1m scratchcard to warring exes

A SALESMAN who sold a £1 million scratch-off lottery ticket to warring exes says CCTV backs the case for it to be split 50/50.

The Nisa worker said she clearly remembers regulars Michael Cartildge, 39, and Charlotte Cox, 37, coming in and buying two cards.

She claimed the store’s CCTV recorded Michael showing her his phone, supporting his claim he tried to transfer cash to cover the purchase.

The assistant believes that it is only fair to share.

She said: “I’m not on anyone’s side. I like them both. But I sincerely believe that the money should be theirs.

“How can you live with yourself after robbing half a million? I know I couldn’t.”

The couple are in a bitter dispute over the jackpot, with security engineer Michael claiming he is entitled to half.

Waitress Charlotte dismissed his claim he tried to send the cash as rubbish – and is thought to be the sole winner of the big payout after she kicked him.

A shop worker in Spalding, Lincs, said the pair usually bought drink but were deprived on the fateful Friday in October.

“I know her bank account paid for it, but morally it should go 50-50.”

She recalled Michael trying to send money for two £5 games of Dice Towers.

The assistant said: “I joked, ‘You have no money!’ But he said, ‘Yes, I did. It’s this damn signal here’. Then he brought the phone towards her and it was a spinning wheel.”

CCTV of their visit was captured as part of Lottery bosses’ investigation into the row. It is said to show Michael showing his phone to a shop assistant.

She was also said to have given a statement to Lincolnshire Police.

But new lottery owner Allwyn ruled that Charlotte was the rightful claimant because her name was on the back of the card.

Michael claimed the couple discussed buying the house with the winnings.

But three weeks later he was kicked out of mother-of-one Charlotte’s home.

She told The Sun: “I bought a ticket. He didn’t transfer the money to me.”

IT’S GAME OVER FOR JACKPOT PARTNERS

By Rachel Dale

THERE’S been a long history of couples breaking up after big lottery wins.

Adrian and Gillian Bayford won £148million on the 2012 EuroMillions before splitting 15 months later.

The couple, who were living in Haverhill, Suffolk at the time, cited the pressure of their huge win as part of the reason.

Kirk Stevens and girlfriend Laura Hoyle have won £10,000 a month for 30 years in the Set for Life 2021 draw.

Laura was living with him rent-free in Hucknall, Notts, when Kirk suggested she pay £25 a week into the Lotto instead.

It certainly paid off – but the next year she dumped him, moved into a fancy new house and cut him off from his booty.

Teachers Gerry, 71, and Lisa Cannings, 55, won £32.5m in 2016 and vowed to remain “Mr and Mrs Boring and Normal”. But the Lincs couple split four years later and are now with new partners.

Other Lotto jackpot winners include Gareth and Catherine Bull from Notts, who won £40.6m in 2012.
